Edward Newgate wasn't a man known for surprises. He was predictable in the best way, steadfast, dependable, and as immovable as a mountain.
His sons had long since learned to expect the usual from him, wisdom over dinner, gruff affection hidden behind deep belly laughs, and a bottomless well of patience for their antics.
So when he casually dropped the biggest bombshell of their lives over dinner, it was no wonder that all hell broke loose.
The family had gathered around the long dining table, plates piled high with food, the evening filled with the usual mix of banter and bickering.
Marco was sipping a beer, listening to Thatch brag about his latest kitchen experiment, while Ace and Sabo were deep in a heated argument about which of them had won their last spar.
Luffy, ever the wildcard, was halfway through shoving an entire burger into his mouth. Then Edward, in that deep rumbling voice of his, spoke.
"By the way" he started, picking up his drink with all the nonchalance in the world. "I've got a girlfriend". The silence that followed was absolute. Then...
"YOU WHAT?!". It was as if a bomb had gone off in the dining room. Ace nearly choked on his food. Sabo slapped a hand over his mouth like he'd just heard the world's greatest piece of gossip.
Marco, to his credit, remained composed, but his eyebrows shot up higher than anyone had ever seen. Thatch was gripping the table as if the news had physically shaken him. Luffy, still chewing, blinked and then swallowed before grinning.
"Whoa! That's awesome, Pops!". Edward took another sip of his drink, wholly unaffected by the hurricane of reactions around him.
Marco was the first to recover, though the disbelief in his voice was clear. "Hold on. Pops, are you serious?". Edward gave him a flat look. "When have I ever joked about something like this?"
Marco opened his mouth, thought for a second, then sighed. "Fair". That was when the questions started flying. "Who is she?!" Sabo demanded, leaning forward with bright, eager eyes. "How did you meet?!"
"How long has this been going on?!" Ace added, shoving his plate aside like this was now the most important conversation in the world.
"Does she know you snore like a damn freight train?" Thatch smirked, earning himself a glare from his father.
"Does she like meat?" Luffy asked, ever the simple one. Edward exhaled heavily, rubbing the bridge of his nose. He should've expected this level of chaos, but still, it was exhausting. "One at a time".
"Yeah, but we need details!" Thatch insisted. "You can't just drop something like this and expect us to not interrogate you. This is like, the biggest news of the decade!"
