A/N: Very weird but whilst writing these, not one but TWO of my friends told me they were pregnant! (Due at the same time crazy). Anyway, hope you love these as much as I do, might just be some of my faves in here (ahem Barto and Kid ahem). Oh also I apologise for making everyone crouch in front of the reader but I just love when men do that ugggghh.
Oh also yes I'm dumb, I missed the headcannons/facts part. So I may come back and add that later...
Smoker The buzz of the cafeteria echoed against steel walls, chairs scraping, trays clattering, conversation overlapping in a comfortable midday hum. You sat near the far end of the room, a tray balanced on your lap, trying to focus more on your food than your sore feet.
The cafeteria wasn't bad, all things considered. The stew was tolerable today, and you weren't on your feet for once. A win.
"Lieutenant" one of the younger officers said from across the table, "Permission to ask a stupid question?". You arched a brow. "You always have permission for that".
He grinned, nervous. "Why are you still on base?". You blinked. "Because I work here?". "I mean, yeah, but-" he gestured vaguely at your belly, which was, frankly, very noticeable at this point.
"You're due soon, right? Shouldn't you be on leave or something?". Before you could reply, the cafeteria door opened with a metallic groan. A few heads turned. Some shoulders stiffened.
Smoker walked in, a smoke trail following behind him. His gaze swept the room once, slow and unreadable, until it landed on you. You didn't wave. He didn't nod. Nothing was said, but you both knew he was coming your way.
The younger marine swallowed hard and looked like he regretted every word he'd just said. Smoker didn't say anything as he stopped behind your chair.
He looked down at your tray, then scanned the table. His eyes lingered a second longer than necessary on the very nervous ensign next to you before he muttered, "Eat more".
You blinked up at him. "This is more. I went back for seconds". He grunted. Not pleased, but not pushing it. Then, without being invited, he pulled over a chair, and sat beside you with his arms crossed. He didn't say anything else.
You went back to your food. The table was silent for a beat too long. Then the young marine, eyes wide, leaned toward another and whispered, "Did he just sit down with her?".
"I didn't think he ate in here" they whispered back. You resisted the urge to roll your eyes. Smoker leaned slightly closer, voice low enough only you could hear. "You were limping earlier".
You scoffed. "I wasn't". "You were". You sighed, ignoring his pointed look. "My back's tight. It's fine". He didn't respond, just reached out, thumb brushing lightly against your spine, exactly where the pressure point had been bothering you all morning.
