A/N: Oh hello there.. don't mind me, just posting this like many months later after an unexpected hiatus.. haaaa.. so sorry about that, truly I am, but I don't want to ramble here, when I can instead offer you some sexy Smoker fic, so here we go. Enjoy!!
The first thing the recruits learnt about you, was that you did not need to shout to make grown men reconsider every decision that had led them to your training yard.
Dawn had only just dragged itself over the edge of the Grand Line, the sky still bruised with purple and grey where the sea pressed against the horizon, and already the G-5 Marines under your command were sweating through their shirts.
You had them stumbling through the final stretch of footwork drills with grim hollow eyed misery. The yard rang with boots striking packed earth, wooden practice sticks clacking together, and the occasional pained groan that you ignored unless it became dramatic enough to deserve correction.
You walked along the line with your marine coat settled over your shoulders, the word 'justice' spread broadly across your back. It still felt heavy some mornings, like the weight of being Lieutenant physically sat on your shoulders.
You had worn that word, justice, since you had been young enough to believe the world could be sorted neatly into right and wrong if only enough good people stood in uniform. The years as a marine had taught you better, and the Grand Line had been slowly adding new reasons.
Still, you kept wearing it because someone had to stand between civilians and the kind of people who'd trample over them in their pursuit of being the best, and someone had to make sure the men in front of you learned how to do that without losing sights of their goals, or becoming monsters themselves.
"Your guard drops every time you step left" you called as you passed behind a broad shouldered marine whose reputation for brawling had somehow led him to fighting for the Marines, and you'd be lying if you said you hadn't noticed a lot of potential in him.
When he straightened and overcorrected, nearly taking his partner down in the process, you caught the back of his collar and hauled him upright before he could start a human landslide. "If that had been a real fight, you'd have lost. Again, and this time try not to make my report to Captain Tashigi longer".
The mention of Tashigi made a few of them straighten, more out of respect than fear. Captain Tashigi had a gentler manner than most officers assigned to G-5, but the men had learned very quickly that softness in her voice did not mean weakness in her spine.
She had a way of correcting poor behaviour that made even the most shameless Marines look briefly like chastised schoolboys, and you admired that more than you ever really confessed aloud.
Tashigi had patience where you had precision. She had discipline so polished it seemed impossible to dirty. She could step into a room full of rowdy Marines, pirates, or superior officers and somehow remain entirely herself, earnest and awkward sure, but she knew how to argue for her own beliefs.
