A/N: I mean, I tried! Sorry if it isn't what you were looking for but I mulled over this one for days unsure how to approach this lmao!
The wind dragged sand down the main road, whispering through the ribs of half empty buildings. You'd been in this town a few weeks, not enough time for folks to stop staring at the horns, but long enough for them to realise you weren't here to cause trouble.
Your boots struck the dirt in a slow, even rhythm. A couple of kids waved from beside the fruit stand. You gave a lazy tip of your hat. One brave girl offered up a pear, you crouched, took it with a quiet thank you, and she giggled.
Of course, peace never lasted. A crash split the air, barrels rolling, a woman's shout. Pirates. You could tell by the smell of cheap rum and arrogance before you even turned. Half a dozen of them swaggered through the market, snatching whatever they wanted. Their captain strutted in front, long coat, big grin.
You chewed the inside of your cheek, sighed, and stepped forward. "You should put it back" you suggested. Your voice came out calm, almost bored. "And leave the folks here alone".
The laughter was instant amongst the pirates. "What the hell are you meant to be? I ain't never seen a deer talk!". Another piped up. "Oi, you head butt trees with those things, cowboy?".
A third pirate squinted, leaning around his captain. "Walks like he's got somethin' stuck up his coat". "Maybe he hides apples in those antlers for later!" one cackled, lobbing a bruised fruit that bounced off your shoulder.
You stayed still, gaze unmoved. The more you didn't react, the braver they got. "Hey, I'm talkin to you, forest freak" another barked, stepping closer. "Think you're something special?".
One snatched the pear from your hand and took a bite, grinning with juice on his chin. "Nice of you to share". The captain finally ambled up, a big man, too much gold in his teeth. He looked you over like you were a joke that hadn't finished telling itself. "You got a real funny look, friend. Don't think you're scarin anyone with those decorations on your head".
He reached out and flicked one of your antlers with a ringed finger. A sharp sound cut the air, his laughter. "I'd mind your hand" you warned quietly. He raised an eyebrow. "What was that?". "I said, I'd mind your hand if you plan on keepin it". You repeated.
They all roared with laughter again, thinking you bluffing. One shoved your shoulder, another tugged at your coat. You didn't move. "I don't aim for trouble" you continued, thumb brushing the hammer of your revolver with a click, "but I don't walk past wrong neither".
The pirates turned back to the market like you weren't even there, ripping fruit from stalls, dumping baskets, shouting at the cowering vendors. A little boy cried when one of them snatched his mother's purse. That did it.
Your jaw flexed once. "Enough". A few villagers had frozen behind their stalls, others cowered in the streets. You flicked your eyes toward them. "Get outta here" you told them softly. "No sense watchin what's about to happen".
