The afternoon sun filtered through the portholes of the Polar Tang's mess hall, casting dancing reflections across the metal walls as the submarine bobbed gently on the surface. You sat wedged between Shachi and Penguin at one of the long tables, your fork scraping against your plate as you finished the last of your lunch.
"I'm telling you, that's not how it happened!" Shachi protested, his arms gesturing wildly enough that his elbow nearly knocked into your shoulder. His sunglasses slipped slightly down his nose as he leaned forward, pointing across you accusingly at Penguin.
Penguin rolled his eyes, swallowing his mouthful of food before responding. "Bepo was there. Bepo, tell him!" He turned to the large polar bear, mink sitting beside him, his tone insistent and just a bit whiny.
Bepo's ears flattened against his head, and he hunched his shoulders apologetically. "I'm sorry! I don't really remember..." His voice trailed off into a mumble, his large paws fidgeting with his fork.
You couldn't help but laugh, shaking your head at the familiar scene. "Seriously guys. Does it really matter how it happened? This is the third argument today, and it's barely past noon". Your voice carried fond exasperation as you pushed your empty plate away and stretched your arms above your head.
"It's an important debate!" Shachi insisted, crossing his arms over his chest with exaggerated dignity. "The historical accuracy of who actually caught that huge fish last month matters!"
"Oh it matters alright" Penguin agreed, grinning wickedly. "Especially since we all know it was me". Before Shachi could launch into another round of protests, you stood up, grabbing your plate.
"Well, you can continue this fascinating discussion while we get ready. Captain's orders were to head out by two o'clock, and knowing how distracted you two get in town, we should probably leave early". You raised your eyebrows meaningfully at both of them.
Bepo perked up slightly, his earlier anxiety forgotten. "Oh! The supply run! I almost forgot!" He scrambled to his feet, nearly knocking over his chair in the process. "Sorry!"
"See, at least someone takes their responsibilities seriously" you teased, reaching over to pat Bepo's arm reassuringly. The mink's face brightened at the praise, a small smile crossing his features.
Shachi and Penguin exchanged glances before simultaneously groaning and standing up. "Fine, fine" Shachi conceded, stretching his arms behind his back. "But we're finishing this later buddy". "Whatever helps you sleep at night" Penguin muttered, though his grin betrayed his amusement.
