The Polar Tang. The place you called home. Always a place filled with the sounds of your loud, obnoxious crew mates. Except for one.

Penguin had been unusually quiet since breakfast, his usual boisterous demeanor tempered by a slight embarrassment.

You noticed it in the way he avoided meeting your gaze during the rest of breakfast, and how he busied himself with tasks that didn't usually require much attention, double checking equipment, organizing supplies, anything to keep his hands and mind occupied.

You tried to approach him several times throughout the morning, but every attempt felt thwarted by some cosmic joke.

First, Ikkaku roped you into helping her with a stubborn piece of navigational equipment that just wouldn't calibrate.

Then, Law called you to discuss your weekly progress report, a conversation that dragged on longer than necessary.

And just when you thought you had a clear chance, Shachi needed assistance with some heavy crates that had shifted during a rough patch of sea.

By the time the afternoon rolled around, you were almost convinced you'd never get a moment alone with Penguin, but as fate would have it, you finally caught him on the lower level of the sub, checking the torpedo alignments, an unusually solitary task.

"Penguin" you called out as you approached, your boots clanking slightly against the metal floor.

He looked up, a hint of surprise flashing across his face before he managed a guarded smile. "Hey. Need something?"

You stopped a few feet away, hands in your pockets. "Actually, yeah. I was thinking... To pay you back for, you know, the other night, we should find something fun to do on the next island. Just to take the edge off".

Penguin's smile faltered for a moment, his eyebrows knitting together as if he were trying to decipher your words. "Pay me back? For what?"

You rolled your eyes, though a smile tugged at your lips. "Don't play dumb, Penguin. I know you let me win".

For a moment, he didn't respond, just stared at you with a look that was part playful, part bashful. Then, slowly, his smile returned, wider this time. "I have no idea what you're talking about" he shrugged, his voice tinged with feigned innocence.

You laughed, shaking your head. "Sure, whatever you say, but think about it, okay? It could be fun".

"I'll think about it" he promised, though the twinkle in his eye said he'd already made up his mind.

As you turned to leave, you missed the way his gaze lingered on your retreating figure, or the small, knowing smile that curved his lips.

It had taken a few days of sailing, a few routine checks, and more than one tense moment navigating a stretch of undersea rock formations, but at long last, the Polar Tang surfaced and docked at a quiet, sunny little island.
