The Moby Dick rocked gently beneath your feet as you sat in your usual spot on deck, tucked away near the railings where the wind wasn't as strong.

The Whitebeard Pirates bustled around you, laughing, shouting, and working as they always did. It had been two weeks since you'd stepped foot on this ship, and in that time, you hadn't spoken a single word.

It wasn't that you didn't want to, it was that you couldn't. Your hands tightened slightly around the fabric of your sleeve, pulling it up closer to your face, as if shielding your mouth could somehow make you invisible.

The crew was kind. Loud, brash, and overwhelming at times, but kind. No one had been cruel to you, not once, but you knew how people reacted when you tried to speak. You had spent years learning that lesson.

A familiar voice snapped you from your thoughts. "Oi, Y/N!". Thatch strolled over, balancing a tray of food in one hand while twirling a fork in the other.

His easygoing grin never faltered as he set the tray down beside you and plopped onto the deck, legs crossed like this was the most normal thing in the world.

"You've been skipping meals again" he said, stabbing a piece of grilled fish with his fork before pointing it at you accusingly. "Don't think I haven't noticed".

You hesitated, eyes flickering to the tray. It wasn't intentional. The meals were lively, filled with chatter and laughter that you weren't sure how to be part of. Sitting in silence while everyone else talked only made you more aware of your own quietness.

Thatch seemed to read your mind. "You don't have to worry, you know. Just eat". You nodded slightly, reaching for a piece of bread. The moment you did, Thatch beamed as if you had just done something incredible. You looked down, embarrassed.

"Hey, this is progress compared to the day you got here" he mused, leaning back on his hands. "Standing there like you didn't know whether to run or jump overboard".

He chuckled, but it wasn't cruel. "Pops took one look at you and knew you'd be one of us".

Your mind drifted back to that moment, to the first day you stood on the deck of this ship, heart pounding in your chest.

The sea had been cruel to you, tossing your small boat like it was nothing. You hadn't planned to cross paths with the Whitebeard Pirates, no one did unless they were looking for trouble.

You had been alone, stranded in the middle of the ocean with nowhere to go. You didn't remember much of the rescue. Only strong arms lifting you aboard, the brightness of the midday sun, and a voice deeper than the ocean itself.
