A/N: okay okay, I'm a sucker for dad Law, just a lil!! Also we read and we don't judge, I am terrible with names but the kid obviously needed one, so here! I hope you enjoy!!
The metallic groan of the Polar Tang's hull settling against the dock echoed through the corridors, a sound you'd grown intimately familiar with over the years.
You stood in the common area, lost in thought, watching the morning light filter through the small porthole in fractured beams. Around you, the crew buzzed with an energy that only came with landfall.
Penguin's voice carried from somewhere down the corridor, already plotting the day's adventures. Shachi's laughter punctuated whatever ridiculous plan they were concocting. Even Ikkaku had a certain lightness to her step as she passed by.
The room slowly emptied out, except for you, most of the crew having already migrated toward the upper deck or their quarters to prepare for departure. The Polar Tang felt oddly spacious in these moments, before the inevitable rush of everyone leaving, like a held breath before the exhale.
Footsteps approached, measured, purposeful, instantly recognisable. You didn't need to turn to know Law had entered, though you did anyway, in his hand be held his medical inventory notebook.
He'd been working on it since before dawn, that familiar crease of concentration etched between his dark brows returned as his tattooed fingers moved down the pages. He looked tired, there were shadows under his golden eyes that told everyone he'd spent another night working too late.
"We're low on antibiotics" he muttered, more to the notebook than to you, though you were the only other person present. His finger continued to trace down a column of numbers. "And we've gone through sutures faster than predicted, we'll need to restock at least three different gauges".
You moved closer, looking over his shoulder at the neat handwriting that filled the pages. Lists upon lists, categorised and cross referenced, every item tracked with the obsessive attention to detail.
Bandages. Antiseptic solutions. Sterile gloves. The inventory of a doctor who knew exactly how quickly supplies could dwindle, who'd learned through experience that running out of the right medicine at the wrong time could mean the difference between life and death.
"I'm sure we'll have no problem restocking on the island" you offered quietly. "Anything is better than nothing". Law closed the notebook with a soft snap, his jaw tightening slightly. "This island doesn't look prosperous. I'm not expecting high quality supplies".
He wasn't wrong. Even from the limited view through the portholes, you'd seen enough of the town to recognise the signs of a place that had seen better days, buildings with faded paint and sagging roofs, streets that looked more worn than maintained, an overall atmosphere of weariness that seemed to permeate everything.
Law moved to the door. "I'm going then for supplies". It wasn't quite an invitation, but it wasn't a dismissal either. You'd been with the Heart Pirates long enough to recognise the subtle difference, the way Law's statements sometimes carried unspoken offers for those who knew how to listen for them. "I'll come" you told him. Law glanced at you, his expression unreadable for a moment. Then he gave a small nod.
