A/N: Well can safely say, this one is much happier than the other Marineford story!! Promise!!
The sea stretched endlessly before you, dark and foreboding beneath the storm clouds gathering overhead. The wind carried the distant scent of rain, but that wasn't what made your chest feel so tight.
The unease had settled in your bones long before your crew set sail, long before the news reached your ears. Ace was going to die.
Your fingers curled over the railing of your ship, knuckles white from the pressure. No matter how many times you repeated the thought, it refused to settle as reality.
It couldn't be real. Ace, your Ace, wasn't meant to die. He was meant to laugh too loudly, eat too much, tease you for getting worked up over things.
He was meant to be beside you, grinning as the sun kissed his freckled cheeks. Not locked away in Impel Down. Not shackled and waiting for execution at Marineford, and yet, that's where he was.
A familiar, aching movement beneath your ribs pulled you from your spiralling thoughts. Instinctively, your hand drifted down to rest against your swollen stomach, cradling the life growing inside you. Your child, Ace's child.
It wasn't just for you that you had to fight. It wasn't just for him. A throat cleared behind you, and you turned to see your first mate, concern etched deep into his weathered face. "You should be resting".
You shook your head. "I can't". His mouth pressed into a thin line. "No one's asking you to stay behind, but we are asking you to take care of yourself. You're nearly full term. You can't be throwing yourself into a war-"
"I don't care" you snapped, more sharply than intended. You took a breath, forcing yourself to soften. "I can't sit and do nothing. I won't".
The words sat heavily between you. Your crew understood, they always had. They knew how much Ace meant to you, how much the Whitebeard Pirates had done for you in the past.
They weren't fighting just for a fellow pirate, they were fighting for their captain, for the family you had chosen to build together, but none of that eased the tension in their expressions.
"...You're our captain" your first mate finally said, voice quieter. "We'd follow you anywhere, but if something happens to you" His gaze flickered downward to your stomach. "We're not just risking you. We're risking that child, too".
A lump formed in your throat, but you swallowed it down. "I know the risks". The ship rocked slightly as the wind picked up, a reminder of how close you were getting.
Marineford was waiting on the horizon, hidden behind the mist and tension hanging in the air. The battlefield would be brutal. Bloody, and Ace was right in the middle of it.
Your fingers curled protectively over your stomach again, a quiet promise passing between you and the unborn child within. "I'll survive" you murmured. "For both of us".
