The first thing you became aware of was warmth. Not the oppressive heat of summer, that didn't happen here, nor was the stifling closeness of too many blankets piled high, but the steady, radiating warmth of another body beside yours. It was the kind of warmth that seeped into your bones, that made you want to press closer and never leave, that turned waking up into something to savour rather than merely endure.
Your eyes fluttered open slowly, lashes brushing against the pillow. The room was dark, here there was no morning light that could filter through the curtains of Mihawk's bedroom. Despite the constant gloomy sky, the curtains fabric was dark, a deep burgundy, and thick enough to block out light if there was any.
Your bedroom now, you reminded yourself, though the thought still sent a pleasant flutter through your chest even after all this time living here. It had taken months before you'd stopped thinking of Kuraigana Island as 'his' castle and started thinking of it as 'home'. Mihawk had never pressured you, never rushed you, but you'd seen the subtle satisfaction in his eyes the first time you'd referred to it as 'our' room rather than his room.
You turned your head carefully against the pillow, moving with deliberate slowness, you desperately didn't want to disturb Mihawk beside you. The pillowcase was smooth against your cheek, silk, because Mihawk, for all his ascetic discipline, had particular tastes about certain creature comforts.
Dracule Mihawk looked different in sleep. The observation wasn't new, you'd seen him sleeping before, of course, but it never failed to strike you. The sharp intensity that usually defined his features, that made men twice his size take an involuntary step backward, had softened into something almost peaceful.
His face, normally set in expressions ranging from mild interest to cold disdain, had relaxed completely. The severe line of his jaw was still there, still strong and defined, but without the tension he carried through his waking hours.
His dark hair was mused from sleep, and your fingers itched with the desire to brush through the strands. His skin, pale from a life spent largely indoors when not fighting, seemed to glow in the soft morning light, and for once, those piercing golden eyes, eyes that could pin a person in place with a single glance, were hidden behind closed lids.
His mouth, usually pressed into expressions of boredom or faint disapproval, had relaxed into something almost soft. You could see the full shape of his lips now, without the tension that usually thinned them.
Waking before him was a rarity that felt almost like stumbling upon hidden treasure, or witnessing some rare celestial event. Usually, he was already awake when you stirred, either sitting up in bed with a book balanced on his knee, or already up and moving through his morning routine with that efficient grace he brought to everything.
