A/N: This is technically a part 2 to the domestic Mihawk one, though I think it sits nicely as a stand alone for any of you who aren't fans of NSFW and don't want to consider it a part of that one. Also if this seems short it is. It's only 6k, and that's because I've written so much NSFW, specifically Mihawk. There's only so much I can do before I start repeating myself so. Enjoy? OH YEAH AND MINORS BE GONE
Sleep had never been a particularly elusive thing for you, usually you got into bed, and had no problems falling asleep. However there were exceptions, nights like this one.
The castle was quiet, a deep and ancient stillness that settled into the stone walls and the dark corners of every room. Outside, wasn't so quiet, the sea murmured distantly against the rocks below, and humandrills weren't quiet, but those were sounds so constant it had long since stopped registering as anything at all.
The candles had burnt out hours ago. The room was dark save for the thin silver of moonlight that crept through the gap in the curtains and lay across the floor like a blade. It was likely past midnight, the beginning hours of the day, before the sun would rise, and you were still awake.
You had been for a while now. Long enough that the comfortable weight of the blankets had started to feel less like warmth and more like something pressing down on you. Long enough that you had catalogued every detail of the room you could make out in the dark.
The carved bedpost, the shape of Mihawk's sword resting against the wall, the way the moonlight caught the edge of the mirror.
Time had done that thing where your thoughts had started to refuse to settle on anything and instead skipped from one thing to the next like a stone skipping across water, fast and aimless.
You shifted, carefully of course, just a small adjustment, rolling slightly onto your side and tucking your hands beneath the pillow. That helped for approximately two minutes before your knee decided it needed to be somewhere else.
You moved it. Then your shoulder was wrong. You adjusted, but the pillow wasn't quite right, and you had to flip it to the cooler side, which involved a bit more movement than you intended.
You stilled after that, squeezing your eyes shut, willing your body to just stop. To go heavy and slack the way it did when sleep actually came. You breathed slowly, deliberately, perhaps you could fool your body? No. It didn't work, not that you were confident that it would.
You turned over fully, facing away from Mihawk now, toward the thin strip of moonlight on the floor. You watched it for a while. Thought about whether the moon looked bigger in winter. Wondered if that was actually true or something you'd made up.
Wondered how long it would take to sail to the nearest winter country from here. Wondered if Mihawk had ever.. You caught yourself and exhaled quietly through your nose. Just sleep. You needed to go to sleep.
