Makino's bar smelled of spiced rum, fresh bread, and the lingering scent of seawater that clung to the Red Haired Pirates like a second skin. The lively chatter of Shanks' crew filled the space, laughter and drunken boasts echoing off the wooden walls.

You had grown used to the noise, used to the constant energy that followed them wherever they went. It was home, at least, for now.

You sat at a round table in the corner, fingers tapping idly against the wood as you studied the hand of cards in front of you. Across from you sat Lucky Roux, his usual grin replaced by a concentrated frown.

Beside him, Yasopp leaned forward with a smirk, eyes flicking between you and the pile of berries in the centre of the table.

"Kid's got a good poker face" Yasopp mused, swirling his drink. "Takes after his old man". You didn't react, keeping your expression unreadable as you adjusted your grip on the cards.

That was the trick, after all, never let them know what you were thinking. Benn Beckman, your father, had drilled that into you ever since you first started playing. 'Poker isn't about luck, it's about control. The moment you let your emotions show, you've already lost'.

Lucky Roux scratched his head, eyes narrowing as he tried to gauge your play. "You're bluffing" he pointed, but his voice lacked confidence. You tilted your head slightly. "Am I?"

He hesitated. Then, with a huff, he folded his cards and leaned back in his chair. "Damn it. I can't tell with you". Yasopp followed, with a chuckle. "That's why he wins so much".

With a small smirk, you laid your cards down, four of a kind. Lucky Roux groaned. "Unbelievable". As you reached forward to pull in your winnings, the doors to the bar slammed open with a loud bang, drawing everyone's attention.

Standing in the doorway, panting and grinning like he had just won a battle, was a small kid with a messy mop of black hair, you realised very quickly who this kid was. The crew had spoken about him a few times now.

"Shanks!" the kid yelled, completely ignoring the fact that the man he was looking for wasn't even inside. You raised an eyebrow.

Makino sighed, already moving from behind the counter. "Luffy, how many times have I told you not to barge in like that?"

The boy, Luffy, grinned at her before turning his attention to the room, scanning the faces until his eyes landed on you. His grin widened.

"Hey! You're new!" He ran up to your table without hesitation, resting his hands on the edge and looking at you with wide, curious eyes. "Are you in Shanks' crew?"

You leaned back slightly, a little caught off guard by the kid's energy. "Uh... yeah?". Luffy beamed. "That's so cool! I'm gonna be a pirate too!". You exchanged glances with Yasopp, who chuckled. "This one's been saying that for a while now".
