Luffy was not used to feeling nervous. But as he sat at the kitchen table, staring down at a notepad covered in Ace's messy handwriting, a strange unease settled in his stomach.
"So, first dates are important" Ace was saying, tapping his pen against the notepad for emphasis. "You've gotta do something that'll impress her. Show her you've got style". Luffy tilted his head. "Style?"
"Yeah, like dressing up, going somewhere fancy" Ace explained, gesturing wildly. Sabo, who was leaning against the counter with a cup of coffee, chuckled. "Luffy, you might want to aim for something romantic. Girls like thoughtful gestures. Flowers, candlelit dinners, stuff like that".
"Or keep it classic" Law chimed in from the corner, flipping through a book. "A quiet café where you can talk. Something low-key". Luffy's brow furrowed as he tried to absorb their advice. "But... what if I don't like any of that stuff?"
"It's not about you" Ace answered, smirking. "It's about her". Luffy blinked. "Oh". He scratched his head, his usual confidence wavering. It all sounded complicated, but if it was for you, he figured it was worth a try.
Two days later, Luffy showed up at your house wearing a shirt that looked suspiciously like it belonged to Sabo. The buttons were uneven, and the collar was slightly wrinkled, but the effort was clear.
"Uh... hi" you greeted, trying not to laugh. "Hi!" he beamed, holding out a bouquet. This time, it was slightly better than the last, mostly roses, though a stray dandelion had made its way in.
"Thanks" you accepted, taking the flowers with a smile. "What's the plan?". "Dinner!" Luffy replied, his grin wide. You raised an eyebrow. "Dinner?". "Yeah! Ace said fancy dinners are good for dates!"
The restaurant he took you to was... something. It was clear Luffy had no idea how to navigate a place like this. He fumbled with the menu, stared at the waiters like they were speaking another language, and knocked over the water jug.
By the end of the night, he looked completely frazzled. "I don't get it" he started as you walked home. "Why do people like this stuff? It's so boring!". You laughed, patting his arm. "It's okay, Luffy. I still had fun". But the disappointment in his eyes was hard to miss.
For his next attempt, Sabo suggested a date involving the dreaded flowers and a picnic in the park. It was supposed to be simple, romantic, and foolproof. It was not foolproof.
Luffy showed up with a basket that looked like it had been thrown together at the last minute. Half of the sandwiches were squished, and the fruit was still in the grocery store bag.
When you got to the park, things didn't improve. Luffy tried to spread out the blanket but tripped over it instead, sending the basket flying.
By the time you sat down, you were both laughing so hard you could barely breathe. "I don't think this is how it's supposed to go" he muttered, grinning sheepishly. "I don't care" you smiled back at him. "As long as we're having fun".
