A/N: so I wrote this, and then rewrote this, and then rewrote this again and I still don't love it 😭. I'm not sure I can do better than this though, so it's here. Now I decided at 4am I need to add some flavour

So slight TW for the mention of infertility ish issues. I'll pop a little * at the beginning and end of that paragraph!!

The ship swayed gently beneath your feet, though the tension on deck was anything but calming. The Rocks Pirates weren't known for their camaraderie, this was a gathering of powerful individuals, each one larger than life and twice as difficult to deal with.

You sat off to the side of the chaos, fiddling with a loose thread on your jacket whilst Linlin argued loudly with Kaido over the spoils of their latest raid. Rocks D. Xebec, your captain sat in his usual place, barking orders with a smug grin as the crew handled the aftermath of their victory. Everyone's egos clashed like the thunderous waves against the hull, and the idea of quiet seemed laughable.

But there was always him. Edward Newgate, leaned against the ship's railing, staring out at the endless sea. He was a big guy, even compared to Kaido, but there was something surprisingly gentle in the way he held himself. You couldn't hear what he was saying over the noise until Kaido's booming laugh caught your attention.

"What did you say, Newgate?" Kaido barked, his voice dripping with mockery. He didn't flinch. His golden eyes remained fixed on the horizon, his voice steady and calm despite the sneers around him.

"I said" he repeated, louder this time, "that my treasure is a family. Someday, I'll have one". The deck exploded with laughter.

"Family? That's your treasure?" Charlotte Linlin cackled, nearly doubling over. "You're a pirate, Newgate! What are you going to do, adopt some fish". Even Rocks joined in with a smirk, though he seemed more amused than cruel.

You didn't laugh. Something about the way he said it struck a chord with you. Amidst a crew driven by power and greed, his dream was so... simple. Almost innocent. He wasn't looking for gold or infamy, he was looking for something real. Something you'd secretly longed for too, even if you'd given up on achieving it.

Before you realised it, you'd moved closer to him. "They're idiots" you spoke quietly, leaning against the railing beside him. "What's wrong with wanting a family?". Newgate glanced down at you, surprised but not unpleasantly so. He studied you for a moment, his gaze softening.

"You don't think it's foolish?". "No" you replied, watching the waves crash against the ship. "Maybe it's the only thing that makes sense. I mean, look at them". You gestured toward the arguing crew. "All that power, all that ambition... What's the point if you've got no one to share it with?".

You saw as he smiled, not the wide, confident grin he wore in battle, but something quieter. Warmer. "Not many people see it that way".

"Well, not many people here are worth listening to" you replied, earning a deep chuckle from him. The sound of Kaido smashing something in the background pulled you both from the moment, but Newgate lingered a little longer before turning back to the chaos.
