A/N: this genuinely took me forever to write. It felt like the never ending fanfic. I ended up changing the ending THREE times to idea 2 by the way. LMAO. I just love love love Roger with all my heart, and yeah. Even though this was meant to be more Shanks and Buggy focused, uh I did end up focusing on Roger quite a bit too.. so sorry for that! But with 47,000 words, there's plenty of content.

The Moby Dick groaned as it descended deeper into the ocean, the coating shimmering around the ship like a soap bubble catching light. You felt the shift in pressure, the way sound changed as water replaced air around the vessel. The usual creaks and groans of wood became muffled and distant, as though the ship itself was holding its breath.

Marco's voice cut through the excited chatter of the crew. "We're approaching Fishman Island" he was closer to your right side than you'd expected. The crew erupted in exclamations, grown men reduced to awestruck children. You heard boots thundering across the deck as pirates rushed to get a better view.

"It's incredible" Marco continued, and you could hear the smile in his voice, that rare unguarded enthusiasm he usually kept hidden beneath his calm exterior. "There's this massive bubble surrounding everything, and inside... the buildings are made of coral, I think. They're all different colors.. pink and orange and blue. There are mermaids and fishmen, and the light-"

He paused, and you heard him take a breath, searching for words adequate to describe what he was seeing. This was the part you'd grown accustomed to over the years, the slight frustration in people's voices when they realised how difficult it was to translate sight into something you could understand.

"It's like the sun is filtering through the ocean itself" he finally said. "Everything glows. The coral, the buildings, even the water has this quality to it, like it's full of tiny lights. There are these kelp forests swaying in the current, and they're taller than our masts".

You nodded, your fingers absently tracing the rough texture of the ship's railing. The wood was fair beneath your touch. After years of blindness, you're mental world building had become more distorted, but you tried anyway. Colours meant nothing to you, you'd lost your sight too young to remember them properly, but you understood light and dark, movement and stillness.

"The reef structures spiral upward like towers" Marco added, his voice moving slightly as he gestured, a habit he'd never broken, despite knowing you couldn't see his hands. "And there are fish, massive schools of them, moving like clouds. Some of them are bioluminescent". "Sounds beautiful" you told simply, because it did, even if you could only imagine it in abstract terms.

Whitebeard's laugh boomed from somewhere behind you, making the deck vibrate beneath your feet. "Look at this place! Even better than the stories!". You heard the smile in Pops' voice, that particular joy he got when discovering something new.

For all his power and reputation, Pops had the heart of an explorer, someone who genuinely delighted in the world's wonders. It was one of the things you loved most about him, one of the reasons you'd stayed when he'd offered Marco a place on his crew all those years ago.
