You stepped off the boat at Marine Headquarters, your heart pounding with a mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation. Around you, the base buzzed with activity, recruits scurrying about, officers barking orders, and the distant clash of sparring swords filling the air.
Today marked your first day in what you hoped would be a long and illustrious career in the Marines. You were determined to stand out, to rise above the rest.
As you made your way to the registration desk, your eyes absorbed every detail, the flags fluttering in the sea breeze, the impeccable uniforms of higher ranking officers, and the sprawling, intimidating structure of the headquarters itself.
After a brief introduction and assignment of your bunk, you were thrust into the whirlwind of day one, basic training. The physical training was gruelling. You ran, jumped, and climbed, pushing your body to its limits while instructors shouted encouragements or, more often, criticisms.
However, you thrived under the pressure, your drive to excel evident in the way you completed each exercise with a bit more finesse and stamina than your peers.
It was during the hand to hand combat session that you truly set yourself apart. As you sparred with a fellow recruit, moving with a precision and awareness that belied your novice status, a shadow fell over the training mat. You glanced up, mid-punch, to see a large figure watching you intently.
Vice Admiral Garp, the Hero of the Marines, stood arms crossed, his formidable presence commanding immediate respect. The session ended, and while others dispersed, he approached you.
"What's your name, recruit?" His voice was deep, resonant, and carried an undercurrent of joviality despite the stern expression. You straightened, saluting instinctively. "Y/N Sir!"
He chuckled at your enthusiasm, waving off the formality. "What drives you to push so hard?" he asked, his eyes piercing as they assessed your mettle.
You swallowed, your response coming from a place of deep conviction. "I believe in justice, sir. I want to make a difference, to protect those who can't protect themselves". Your voice held steady, your gaze never wavering.
Garp nodded, seemingly pleased with your answer. "Let's see how you handle a real challenge" he suggested suddenly, gesturing to a more seasoned recruit who had been observing. "A friendly spar, just a few minutes".
The match was tough. Your opponent was clearly experienced, but you relied on your agility and quick thinking to keep up. Each move, each counter, was a learning experience. You managed a few good hits, earning a nod of approval from Garp.
