A/N: Hope this is long enough for ya!! It's 18K! I love this story so far, so I can't wait to see where the next part goes!
Flevance was never quiet, but your house was the loudest of them all. Sunlight streamed through the warped glass panes, dust motes swirling in the golden light, and everywhere you looked there was something familiar.
Lami's socks draped over the back of a dining chair, your father's spare stethoscope left on the kitchen table, Law's medical textbooks sprawled out across the rug like a toppled fortress.
It smelled like lavender soap and candied almonds, a sweet, warm mix that clung to your clothes and hair.
You lay sprawled on your stomach, chin propped up on your arms, watching Law frown in concentration as he attempted to stitch up the poor sock puppet he used for practice.
His brows pinched, mouth set, as he looped thick thread through felt. He looked every bit the serious doctor he swore he'd be, except for the lopsided crown perched on his head, in place of his usual hat, a remnant of Lami's last dress up game.
"I swear, Law, if you try that on a real person, they're gonna look like a melted rag doll" you teased, snatching a piece of hard candy from the little tin by your elbow.
He didn't glance up. "It's about the method, not the appearance". You grinned, flicking a candy at his arm. "Try telling that to someone who wakes up with their belly button sewn to their shoulder".
He grunted, refusing to give you the satisfaction of a real argument, but you saw the edge of a smile.
Lami ran into the room, her arms full of freshly picked clover flowers, hair sticking out at odd angles. "I made a new crown!" she declared, holding out the tangled green ring towards you.
You sat up, bowing your head so she could settle it on top. The flowers were crushed and uneven, but you wore it like a king's crown anyway. "How do I look?"
"Like a bug" Law muttered, straight faced. You clutched your chest in mock pain. "Tragic. Betrayed by my own brother, seems I can only trust my court jester". You reached out and ruffled Lami's hair, making her squeal and dance away.
"Don't mess it up! I'm gonna braid it next" she insisted, climbing onto your back and tugging your shirt for balance. Her laugh filled the room, high, bright, completely unbothered by the world outside.
Your mother's voice drifted in from the kitchen. "Don't roughhouse in the living room! And Law, if you thread your thumb again, you're cleaning it yourself!"
"Yes, Mama!" Law replied, but he didn't look up. You made a face at him. "Look at you. Teacher's pet". He shrugged. "I just don't want to get yelled at".
You grinned. "Scaredy cat". "Loudmouth". He shot back. You stuck your tongue out, but there was no real bite to it. You and Law fought the way most siblings did, loud, but soft in the ways that mattered.
