The sun spilled golden and wild over the island's ramshackle port, turning battered rooftops and salty sea spray to gold. The Thousand Sunny creaked against the dock, her lion's head bright as ever, even as the crew argued about what to do first.

Luffy, of course, was already halfway down the gangplank, arms stretched, sandals thudding on sun warmed planks. You followed, as you always did. There was something easy about trailing in Luffy's wake.

He barrelled through the world like he'd never even heard of hesitation, and you found yourself swept up by the current of his energy more often than not.

It didn't matter if the town was hostile or friendly, he moved with the same hungry curiosity, the same urge to see, taste, climb, and conquer everything in sight.

"Come on, let's find some food". Luffy flashed you that wide, earnest grin, the one that seemed to start in his eyes before it even touched his mouth.

There was always an extra note of excitement in his voice when he asked you to tag along. Not that anyone else seemed to notice. You doubted even he realised it.

The marketplace was alive with noise and the slap of banners overhead. Luffy made a beeline for the nearest food stall, already pestering the vendor about meat on a stick.

You let yourself be tugged after him, letting the wildness of the island fill your lungs. He didn't let go of your wrist, even as he argued loudly with Sanji about who was going to pay.

You settled in beside Luffy on a bench, eating greasy, wonderful street food while watching the chaos of the crew unravel around you.

Zoro got lost almost immediately, and Usopp was busy insisting to a crowd of children that he was the most feared pirate in the world. Luffy was oblivious to everything but the food in his hands, chewing with wild delight, occasionally shoving a bite in your direction.

"Try this". He held out a skewer, gaze intent. "It's good". You leaned in and took it, laughing as sauce smeared your cheek. He beamed, proud, as if he'd just discovered fire and shared it with you.

There was nothing particularly romantic about it, not on the surface, but you felt it, all the same. Something unspoken humming between you in those bright, careless moments.

Something a little warmer than friendship, a little sharper than comfort. Luffy didn't seem to notice, just grinned and pressed another skewer into your hand.

Later, as you drifted through the market, he darted off to snatch a shiny seashell from a passing vendor, waving it in your direction. "Look, it's weird. Like you". He offered it out with that same, wild grin.

You took it, holding it up to the sun. "Thanks, Captain". He just grinned, all teeth and sunshine, as if he'd given you a treasure.

By the time the sun started to dip low, you were back on the sunny, leaning against the railing with Nami, the chaos of the island settling in your bones. You watched Luffy, now sprawled out on the grass, arms behind his head, eyes shut to the sky.
