Wednesday's pov:

The sound of her heels tapping down into the courtyard told her to hurry down the ever-stretching and turning stairs. All her eyes showed were your last letters words that spiraled faster than the steps down to the courtyard.

There in the center, you sat at a table fiddling with a chess game. A few students lingered around, either reading or talking quietly amongst themselves. The rest of the school was camping just outside in the field as a rain check.

With the grey lighting of the rainy clouds and the darkness of the court, with your red flannel jacket and black beanie, you looked like a loner. A loner who saw the truth behind every word, color, sign, and sound in the world. You looked innocent like a normal teenager, scraping by in high school and tripping into adulthood.

If I could trap you in this moment, life would be much easier.

"Waiting for someone to challenge you Tepes?" She says as she supposedly walks by. You flick your eyes at her boredly at first before sharpening your gaze.

"Always. But it seems like no one knows how to play."

Wednesday sat in front of you. She sees the board was a sleek black and white marble with polished pieces. The white pieces looked as if they were made of snow due to how they glimmered under the cold lighting of autumn. Reminding her of the Queen chess piece you gave her. The damn piece that started the gambit you were all in right now along with the unknown forces of the world.

As for the black pieces they appeared as if they had trapped a black hole due to how no light was able to consume it.

"It appears you're missing a piece." you smirk and dig into your pocket for one but stop when you feel Wednesday's toe on your toe.

Pulling out the chess piece you gave her she places it in front of you. Your eyes widen.

"Didn't expect me to have one?"

You gently pick it up. Your pointer finger dips into the wound the knife left. "This clearly has seen better days."

"The rats that infest this school got a hold on it. They paid a high price for it because no one can harm any of my belongings." And I will continue to do so even if I have to take Hell and Heaven myself.

"That's good. After all this world is full or rats, roaches, sheep, shepherds, wolves, and hunters. Makes me wonder which one you are?"

"A butcher."

You laugh. "Then that would make me what?"

A Queen. A leader. A hope. "My prey." She moves a bishop.

"Prey, eh? But I would be already dead tho." You move a pawn. Wednesday takes note of it. You were trying to communicate something to her about Enid through your play. What did the pawn represent? Enid or an actual pawn being used by someone else to get to both of you through Enid? Was it Tylor? Was it Laurel? Or was it their master?

"Better to be a prey than a pawn."

The game continues. You use only your pawns. Making her see that you were referring to the missing normies.

"Forgive me for bringing up the pawn conversation, but why be anything else than a pawn?"

"They have no power, your highness."

"You sure?" That question shook her bones.

"You see, a pawn may look simple and useless when compared tooooooo," you act as if you're looking for a piece. "The Queen."
