First Day

My new school was ten times the size of my old. I was nervous. My knees shook. May wasn't here to back me up. I needed her to comfort me like she always did. My shoulders stiffened as I watched teenagers walking into school with arms of friends.

I went straight into the school and tried to find the principal's office but got lost.

Great job July!

I walked around the school like an idiot for around twenty minutes trying to find the office.

Eventually a girl my age walked up to me. She had long, glossy blonde hair. Her eyes were deep blue and shone when she smiled.
"Are you new?" She asked.
"Yeah, I am."
"Well hi, I'm Summer Long." She said.
"I... My name is July." I said biting my lip.
"Well hello July." She replied.
There was a silence when Summer spoke up.
"You're not lost are you?"
"A little." I admitted.
"Are looking for the principal's office?"
I nodded.
"This way."
I followed her to the office.
"Thanks," I smiled.
"Anytime," She said walking off.

The principal, Mr Jones directed me to my classroom.
"Okay you're in class A. And in this binder you have your timetable and locker code. If you need anything you know where I am. Is that alright July? Of course it is. You've just moved here from Australia, haven't you? Yes you have, so things may be done different here. When did you get here? Last week I'm guessing? Yes okay so any questions? No, well your class is right through there. Do you wish for me to introduce you?" Mr Jones said.
I shook my head immediately.
I had two reasons for that answer.
1) He was one of those annoying people who answer the questions they you and that drives me mad. He asked four questions in a row without stopping. He didn't even pause between. I mean I lived in England not Australia! What sort of person answers a question like that for you?

How he became principal, I have no idea. I mean what did he do, walk into the interview and say,

"Hello I'm Mr Jones. I'm hard working and I'd love to be the principal. I'm sure you'd love to give me the job right? Of course you would. So I have many ideas to help this school out and make it more enjoyable for both teachers and students. Did I get the job? Oh thank you, of course I did!"

And then he walked out, leaving the interviewers in shock. Okay maybe I'm exaggerating, but you get what I mean.

2) I just didn't need any attention on me.

So of course I declined, without a second thought.

"No thanks." I smiled and walked into the class.

The teacher hadn't arrived yet. I kept my head down trying to ignore the stares and found a spare seat on its own by the window. I wanted to be sitting there chatting to May. I wanted her to comfort me.

Our teacher, Ms Clark walked in the room. She was our teacher for assembly. It was the second week of term so everyone except me knew what was going on.

Ms Clark was young enough with brown eyes and long, blonde hair. She wore thick, black glasses.
"Okay guys. I would appreciate it if you kept the noise level down. It's not the first day back anymore. I don't think anyone of you noticed Mr Jones outside the door a minute ago? It's still only the second week of school so don't bring yourselves down now." Ms Clark said.

"Alright so I hope you all had a lovely weekend everyone and now I'll take the roll call." She began to call out names.
"Erin Brick?"
"Here."
"Jake Carter?"
"Here."
"August Cantwell?"
"Here."
And so on.
"Joel Johnson?"
"Here."
"Summer Long?"
"Here." came a familiar voice. I looked up slightly and saw Summer sitting on the farthest table from me with some friends.
The list went on.
"Camilla Shy?"
"Here."
"July Summer?"
I heard snickers around the room.
"Here," I blushed.
I looked up to see Summer looking surprised to see me in her class, she must not have seen me walk in.
The role went on.
"Daniel Walters?"
"Here."
"Zoey Young?"
"Here."

"Alright now we have all noticed by now that we have a new student. Can we all be as welcoming as we can to July Summer please?" And then the bell rang.

In pretty much all my classes the seating arrangement was done alphabetically except for a few. Like Science, French, Business Studies, History and Geography. Well that's what Summer said. I had Science that day, but none of the others so I guess I won't know for sure until the end of the week.  I sat next to Camilla Shy in a lot of my classes and a girl named Lola Sheehan in some others because of the seating arrangement.

In Science we could sit where we wanted so I sat with Summer as none of her friends were in that science class.

I went home relieved that it wasn't really a terrible first day.
