My life at home is fine. It's not terrible and it's not wonderful. Somewhere between there I suppose. I mean I have a loving family which I'm grateful for, but we wouldn't be what you call 'an average loving family.'
We lost my twin sister May when she was only fifteen. Mom needed bread from the shop and May offered to go so Mom could have a rest.
I remember her walking out the door. She looked the same as always. A lot like me. We weren't identical twins but we were still quite alike. I was convinced that she looked much prettier though.
Her floral scent filled the room before she walked out. I also remember her ability to look confident yet make you feel comfortable in her presence.
Twenty minutes later a policeman knocked on our door and Mom and Dad went out with him. I remember how scared I was. My older brother Calum was watching tv trying not to look alarmed, but I could tell by the flicker of fear in his eyes that he felt the same as me. It was just a flicker but May had the same flicker in her eyes so I could see it very easily.
Kiki was snuggled into me. Well if a nineteen and fifteen year old were alarmed then you could only imagine how a seven year old was feeling.
Roughly and hour and a half later Mom and Dad came through the door. Dad's hair was a mess and his eyes were deep with sorrow. Mom was worse. Her auburn hair was a birds nest. Her face was streaked with splotches of foundation and concealer as well as long lines of mascara and eyeliner making her look like a panda who had a paint fight.
All three of us looked so alarmed seeing the state of them. And then I asked the worst possible question.
"Where's May?"
Mom and Dad burst out crying. Kiki was terrified and howled with them. Calum just stared into space and I stood there confused.
"Where is she?" I tried again.
The crying got louder.
"WHERE IS MAY?" I yelled.
No answer. Just crying.
"MOM, DAD !" I screamed.
"WHERE IS MAY? MOM, DAD, WHERE IS SHE?" I kept screaming.
I was really scared. Calum snapped out of his daydream and yelled at Mom and Dad. "LOOK YOU HAVE A SEVEN YEAR OLD CRYING HER EYES OUT AND A FIFTEEN YEAR OLD ALL ALMOST IN TEARS, STOP CRYING AND TELL US WHAT FUCKING HAPPENED."We didn't get the answer for a whole hour. I mopped Kiki up and Calum made dinner. Mom and Dad wouldn't eat. After we dished up I tried again.
"May missed dinner. Will I leave something out for her?"
Mom shook her head.
"May won't be able to eat anything."
"Why not?" Came Kiki's voice.
A tear slid down Moms eye.
"Is she gonna come home at least?" Kiki asked.
"No dear." Mom said.
"Oh is she staying at Mel's? Or Eva's?" I asked.
"No." Mom replied.
"Well when is she coming home?" Kiki said growing impatient. And then Mom said the word that made me burst into tears and scream. It twisted my mind and left me in shock. I felt empty. Crying and yelling seemed to help at the time. It was such a small word. She whispered it softly.
"Never."
