Inside

There were a few overgrown bushes around the place and the grass looked like it hadn't been cut in decades. There was a couple of large stones covered by more bushes that may have once been a well or a fountain. You wouldn't have guessed it was a garden but I just had a feeling that it was. I remember reading a book like this before. It described the garden and how it was uneasily spotted but still in plain sight. And I knew that at the time of May's death I would have built a house here. But where exactly?

I scanned the garden. My eyes glanced at the far end of the garden. There were a few large bushes. There were a couple more scattered across the garden elsewhere. So altogether about six large bushes. Then it hit me. What if the house was inside a bush? It was a stupid idea but it was worth a shot.

It must have been a small house as the bushes were pretty small but I suppose at the time the brother didn't want a large house. I looked at all the bushes and I tried to imagine which bush I'd select to build my house in. I gazed at a slightly smaller bush in the corner. It was small but thick. I walked over to it and parted the bush.

I gasped at what was behind. It was a small, old house. It was made of stone with a very simple structure. Ivy grew up the walls. There was a small window with a white, lacy curtain drawn to block anybody from peeping inside. The door looked like it would collapse at one push but I knew it was stronger than it looked, but it could probably only last a couple more years at the most. And then I saw a very old sign made of timber, stuck above the door. It said, 'Single House' in block capitals. I gasped again. I had found it, The house from the legend.

I raced back to August in the car.
"I FOUND IT!" I shrieked.
"What? really?" August asked stunned.
I nodded excitedly.
"Then lead the way," he said.

I led him to the bush.
"Here it is."
"Uhh, July, this is a bush," August said.
"No, no," I smiled parting the bushes, stepping through.
He followed me before taking a deep breath and knocking on the door. As I suspected it didn't collapse but dust fell off and onto the ground and into the air, making us cough. A woman peeped through the window. She gasped but we couldn't see her face as the glass was filthy. We heard footsteps and the door began to open. August quickly took my hand. I smiled and squeezed it tightly.

The woman who answered the door looked familiar. She had black hair which hung loosely below her shoulders. Her eyes were chocolate brown, just like August's. She smiled a dazzling smile, showing a set up beautiful, straight, white teeth.
"AUGGIE!" She cried.
"MOM!" August cried.
He let go of my hand and rushed into his mother's outstretched arms. Tears streamed from both August's and June's face.
"Come inside my darling," she whispered, kissing August on his forehead.
Then her eyes rested on me.
"You too, dear," she said.
June then walked into the house with August. I took a deep breath and followed them both inside.
