Chapter 14

Tamatoa's POV

Five days later...

  We arrive on the shores of Montonui and there's a massive crowd of people. They smile at the sight of Maui but cringe at the sight of me. I can feel my insecurity and anxiety floating about and Maui grabs a hold of my hand, squeezing it reassuringly as he's been doing a lot these past few days. He whispers in my ear "I'm here babe. As long as I'm with you, you're safe. I'll be with you all the time. Okay?" I nod and slowly make my way off the boat with Maui. A minute after we get off, I'm face to face with a nervous looking Moana. Her eyes go straight to Maui, silently demanding for an answer as to why I'm here. Instead of answering her in front of everyone, he pulls me and her towards a cave to talk privately. 

   I sit down next to Maui while Moana keeps a slight distance by sitting across from us. Surprisingly, she's the first one to speak. "Maui, why is Tamatoa here? No offense Tamatoa." "None taken", I say. Maui glares at her slightly. "Mo, Tama's a big part of my life as you are." He pats a hand on my knee and rubs it affectionately. Moana notices and immediately tenses up. "Maui, is there something you're not telling me? As your best friend, I deserve to know what someone who's tried to kill me several times is here on my island." Maui rolls his eyes. "Yes you are my best friend Mo, but it's not your island yet. You still have one more year before you become chief. She groans and mumbles "Yeah, don't remind me."

  Not wanting Maui and Moana to get into a squabble so soon, I decide to get the courage and start off the explanation myself. "Moana you're right. There is something that Maui hasn't told you and I think he should. It involves him and I and explains my presence here in Montonui." Maui shoots a glare at me while Moana raises an eyebrow quizzically. "Maui, what is Tamatoa hinting at?" Maui tenses up, his muscles are bulging out and I can see the stress vein in his forehead. This isn't going to be pretty. He looks down at the ground before looking her in the eyes. "Moana, remember when I broke up with because I lost my romantic feelings for you?" The poor girl bites her lip and nods slowly. She doesn't even know what's coming...

  Maui takes a shaky breath and continues. "Well I fell in love with someone else." Moana looks from Maui to me and back. It takes a moment, but she's smart enough to put two and two together. "Y-you and T-Tamatoa are a couple?" Both of us nod hesitantly. I study her face and see that she's trying her best to contain her emotions, but she looks like she's about to explode. "When?" Maui moves closer to her. "When what?" Her eyes begin to cloud up with tears. "When did you stop loving me and fall in love with Tamatoa?" He hangs his head down in shame and his shoulders start to shake. I wrap my arms around him protectively. "Three months before our relationship ended." 

   Moana gasps. "So you're admitting that you led me on for three months? A quarter of our relationship was a staged romance?" I silently watch tears stream down her face, leading to a series of heartbreaking sobs from both her and Maui. Both of them are heartbroken at the turnout of recent events. I can see that deep down there is love still between them. It may not be romantic on Maui's end, but it's still deep. I feel like ever since I came into the picture, I've only complicated things and made them worse. Maybe I need to step aside for a little while. I think when Maui's calm enough, I'm going to talk to him and ask him to consider that. I don't want to leave so soon, but I feel unwelcome here.
