It's my mother's turn to visit our humble abode.

I got home to find her inside our home, with a rag in her hand and cleaning the top of the dining table.

Me: (rushing) Ma! Why are you here? And why are you cleaning?!

I feel ashamed to see my mother cleaning. Did I leave a mess before I went outside to work? I can't remember...

Mama: (tutting) I am cleaning the table because I put the food containers here while I am reorganizing your fridge.

When Mama visits us, she always leave food in containers for me and Qing. Some side dishes and sweets that I am used to eating when I was still in her care.

I miss her cooking sometimes. But...

Me: Ma, how many times do I have to tell you that you don't need to bring food here. It's heavy, you traveled here again carrying those heavy containers, Ma!

I worry about my mother traveling with too many baggages to carry. I don't want her lifting too heavy stuffs when she have me, a son, to do it for her.

Yes! I am the thoughtful son. I am an only child after all. I feel guilty enough with me living here in Beijing and away from them. As an only son or child, shouldn't I stay close to my parents to help them?

Me: Did you and Baba fought?

Is she here because she fought with her husband too, like what happened to Qing's parents?

Mama: (frowning) No, why do you ask that?

Me: (awkward laughing) Ha ha ha, nothing Ma. So why are you here?

Mama: Your father and grandmother went to a relative of theirs because someone died. They went there to attend the funeral.

Me: Oh no. Who died?

Mama: A male cousin of your father.

Me: Are we close to him?

Mama: No, unfortunately. You never even meet him.

Me: I see...but why didn't you come with them?

Mama: Because I am never close to his cousin. I decided to just give my regards and prayers with your father. Then I come here to see you.

Me: Awww...Ma!

I hugged her. She is my favorite person in the world aside from my Baba, GrandMa and Qing. Those four people have an equal space in my heart.

We had dinner together. She made my favorite beef stew. After eating, I volunteered to wash the dishes while she went to the living room.

I went to her after cleaning the kitchen, sitting beside my motber in the couch while she studied the interior of the place.

Mama: (facing me) Dayu, can I ask you again? Are you really sure this is what you want?

My heart leaped a little at her question.

Me: Ma...

Mama: (sighing) Forgive me. I just...
