Qing and I had a scare last week. His mother called around 10pm to say that Kuai had vomited blood. Qing face drained in color and frantically said that he will be there. He just got his keys and I snatched our jackets and we are off to the vet where Qing's dad took Kuai.

When we got to the vet, we got more worried when we saw Kuangnu there too.

Qing: Is there something wrong with Kuangnu too?

He was so worried when he kneeled and let Kuangnu nuzzled his cheek and neck.

Qing's Dad: No. We just took him so Kuai won't miss him and in case something is wrong with him too. But the vet had already checked him and they say Kuangnu is fine.

Oh thank God. I don't know what I will feel if something is wrong with Kuangnu too.

Me: What is wrong with Kuai? Why will he vomit blood?

Qing's Dad: They suspect that he got a chicken bone stuck in his throat and is piercing it. When Kuai tried hacking and spitting back the bone, his throat might have gotten cut that is why there is blood.

Oh Lord. Poor Kuai.

Qing: (absolutely mad) How did he got hold of those chicken bones? Did they rummage in the thrash again? I told you to...

Qing's Dad: (calm in the face of Qing's anger) Someone forgot to close the kitchen door. Kuai and Kuangnu entered the kitchen and stole the leftover roast chicken from the kitchen top.

Great. They are stealing food now.

Before Qing could rant again, a man in white coat came out from the door.

Vet: Mr.Wang?

Qing came forward. I took Kuangnu's leash to make him stay by my side so his Daddy can talk to the vet.

Qing: Yes. How is my dog?

Vet: It's what we fear. A jaggged chicken bone is stuck and piercing his throat. We have to cut open his neck to take it out.

I close my eyes. Qing cursed softly.

Qing: So he needs surgery?

Vet: Yes. We need you to sign the permission slip.

Qing: (nodding and receiving the pad from another personnel on the vet clinic) I just have to sign.

Vet Personnel: You have to fill out the informations on your dog, Sir.

But Qing's hands are shaking so I took the pad from him.

Me: Let me fill it for you. You hold Kuangnu for me.

Qing gladly surrendered the paper to sign to me while he kneeled and held Kuangnu. His dad stayed with Qing.

After filling the information sheet, I give the pen to Qing so he can sign the waiver letting the vet to perform surgery on Kuai.

Qing's dad left after that. We thanked him and told him that we will take the two dogs in the condo after Kuai had his surgery.

I sat next to Qing on the waiting bench as the surgery happened behind the close door. Kuangnu laid on our feet and whined every now and then.

Hospital for humans and hospital for animals had a lot of similarities. The smell, antiseptic and alcohol, is about the same. The atmosphere, cold, quiet and sickness.

I held Qing's hand while waiting.

So is this how a parent feel when their child is sick or vomiting blood? I know that some of you might think, Kuai is only a dog, he is not a real boy or a person. You guys are overreacting.
