Nana MiMi: (amidst the chaos happening around us) (calmly) So, your lover is a guy?

Me: (nodding) Yes.

Nana MiMi: That tall, good looking boy in Meng's wedding?

Me: (nodding again) Yes. That's the one. He is my boyfriend, MiMi.

I don't know how we got here. To the point where Xiao's grandmother finally learned that I am with another man. All I know was that I am here in Harbin for Xiao's birthday dinner, surprised to see Meng was here as well, we were having a delicious albeit tension filled meal...then the next thing you know, words were thrown and now I have to nod to Nana Mimi, it's what we call Xiao's grandmother, to confirm that yes, I am indeed in a love/sexual relationship with another man.

I am conversing calmly with Nana Mimi while Meng and Xiao finally broke their silent war and are now shouting at each other. Our collective parents, Nushi and DaLin are trying their best to keep them from getting physical. Thank God, Meng's two youngest sisters were spared to witness all these dramas.

I winced as I saw Meng throwing a spoon at Xiao.

Meng: (livid) Fuck you! We are bestfriends! I told you to guard my sisters! Not take one to your bed!

Nana MiMi: (sipping her juice calmly) He looks dependable. Strong with solid values. Polite too.

Me: (smiling awkwardly) Thank you for thinking like that, Mimi.

Xiao: (putting DaLin behind him) We will not break up because our relationship hurts your delicate sensibilities, Meng. I guess you should just man up and accept that fact that your sister and I love each other!

Meng: (amazed at what he is hearing) Man up? You are the one who hid this affair because you are scared, you ballless coward!

Xiao: I hid it because I know you will be like this, you grumpy bastard!

Meng: Damn you!

I saw my father and Meng's father get between my two bestfriends as Meng charged to grab Xiao. Our three mothers looking deeply troubled while Nushi is just resigned to the fact that Meng has to shout his frustrations while DaLin is close to getting fed up too.

Nana MiMi and I are the only ones still sitting by the dinner table, calmly discussing my love life.

Nana Mimi: (staring at the chaos happening in front of us) I wish every birthday dinner will be like this. Full of energy and excitement. (Smiling conspiratorially at me) And full of new learnings. Who would have thought, our little Dayu...having an affair with another man. How modern...

I chuckled awkwardly because even though her words are condenscending, Nana Mimi's tone and eyes held no malice. She seems genuinely thrilled to learn that I am shacking inside one house with another guy.

Meng's Baba: (pushing Meng) Stop it now! Stop it! You are upsetting your sister.

Xiao's Mama: (putting herself in front of Xiao) Son, please...this is suppose to be an occasion for you and Meng to talk this thing out calmly.

Calmly? I think this friendship thing has lost the meaning of calm some weeks ago.

Xiao: (agony on his face) How can we talk calmly if Meng is still not ready to listen to me and DaLin?
