Qing: (while we were lying on our bed together) I think Mama fell in love with you all over again. You are letting her nose her way around our clothings.
Me: I am not abusing her love for me, right?
Qing: (snickering) What? For her, going over our closets will not be enough. If we will let her have a free reign in our home, she will control your pantry, our laundry room and even the kitchen. She will just do it all for us and she will still be wanting more.
Me: Your Mama is a saint.
Qing: Mama is nosy. And sad. (Sighing) Ever since I moved out of our mansion, Mama had been grumbling that you and I don't need her that much. She is happy that you are letting her advice you on how to maintain our condo but if you ask her, she wants more. She will shop for us, do grocery for us and, gods forbid, she will even volunteer to pay our bills for us.
Me: (wincing) We should never let her have a free reign in our home then.
Qing: (moving sideways to look at me) (nodding) Mama likes being involve in her children's lives. She thinks, since we moved away, that JiJi and I don't need her anymore. She is wrong, of course. But on the other hand, I don't know how to give her some control in my life. I like having my independence from ny parents.
I nodded my understanding. It is indeed sad, in a way, when a child move out of his or her parents' home. A person's independence might mean that people will think you don't need them. Especially parents. Parents were used to doing things for their kids all the time. Feeding, clothing, housing and giving their kids allowances. But when a kid grew up and started being independent, parents will suddenly find themselves doing nothing but watch their child try their hands at adulting.
Feeling a bit...this is ugly...useless.
Some parents cannot wait for their children to move out and stop being dependent on them. Finding joy in seeing their children grow and be a useful citizen of this world. But there are also parents who likes taking care of their kids and finds it hard to let them go.
Qing's mother is on the latter category. She loves JiJi and Qing so much and was used to orchestrating her children's lives until JiJi and Qing both moved out when they found people they like to live with, me and JiJi's husband.
Qing: Mama had been moaning that we don't let her help us, even in simple domestic matters. But she also respects us and our decision to be independent. So you doing this, asking for her help, she is not exaggerating, you know. This feels like Christmas to her.
Me: I wish we can do more to make her feel that we need her.
Qing: That's my duty, I am her son. It's my duty to make my parents feel that I still value their presence in my life.
Me: (frowning) But I am their son now too...aren't I?
Qing got silent then he slid closer to kiss my lips.
Qing: Thank you, Love. For loving my parents, for indulging my mother and for treating my parents as your parents. We are sure lucky to have you in our family.
Me: (feeling shy) Isn't it the other way around? I feel lucky having you all in my life.
Qing: We are all lucky then.
I embraced my lover and we stayed holding each other on that bed. We snuggled, breathing together and exchange lots of kisses. Qing gave me soothing touches and his calm presence lulled me to sleep.
When I woke up, I already missed lunch and half of the afternoon.
I got out to see Qing talking to someone, probably a business partner, on the phone while checking his emails in his laptop.
