I zip my luggage. I already called Ruth that I am going back. She will be here in a few minutes.
I set my luggage on the ground and pull the handle out. I hear footsteps approaching my door. I breathe in and out, ready for anyone to enter my room.
The door creaks open, and I see my mom walking in, already dress. She looks at me and acknowledges my suitcase. "Mom," I said.
"Mija," she says, cupping my cheeks. "Are you going to go back?"
I nod my head. "Yes," I answer. "And there's nothing you can do to stop me. I can't marry Will. I won't."
"I am not here to stop you," she says. "I am here to talk to you."
"Oh," I said, dumbfounded.
"Sit down, honey," she leads to me to my bed and sets me down. She takes the empty space next to me. "I've talked to your father, but he won't stop. Therefore, I am going to offer to take you to the airport. I gather most of my retirement money, and I am going to give it you so you can go buy a plane ticket."
I shake my head. "No, mom," I said. "I can't take it. You work for that money. It is yours to keep."
"But I love you more," she says.
I smile and close my eyes. I slowly shake my head and open my eyes up. "But I don't need it, mom. I will soon find a job, and until then, I can make it on my own. And you don't have to worry. Ruth's going to take me back."
"Ruth?" She questions.
"Liam's sister," I answer. "She is offering me a ride. She will be here any moment."
She nods her head. "That's good. And I have something else to tell you." Her hands tremble a little, and I sensed it was urgent. I listen intently for what she has to say. "Remember Ms. Furry and how it seemed like Liam poisoned her." I nod my head. "Jade admitted that Liam did not kill the cat. The person who did was Will."
I widen my eyes. "Will?!" I question. I recall he was the one that spotted the tray of food and picked up the tray up. I can't believe it.
"Yeah, I wonder what your father will think of him once he finds out," she says. "I don't think he would want to continue the engagement."
"I don't know what to think about dad," I said. "He changed too much."
"He is only acting like this because he wants to give you the best in his opinion," she says.
"I hope one day he comes back to being the same dad as I knew him to be," I said.
"Me too, mija," she says. I lower my head, only thinking about Liam. He could be in danger right now as we speak. "Are you thinking about him?"
I lift my head and meet her eyes. "Yeah, I am," I answer. "He could be risking his life right now because of me. And something might happen to him."
"Then go down there and wait for your ride to come," she rubs my arm.
Thump!
My mom and I turn to the door where the sound came from. Someone was eavesdropping. I stand up and walk to the door. I open it, and no one was standing at the door. I peek my head out and see my dad, dressed for the party, standing only a few feet before me.
"Dad?" I question. I try to ease my heart beating. I was nervous, wondering how much he heard.
"Ally," He responds. He takes a step towards me, peering right through. I didn't know what to say. Actually, I do. I just couldn't bring myself to tell him. I thought he would give me another lecture. I thought he would force me to go downstairs, but instead, he gave me a hug. I close my eyes, hugging him back. He brushes my hair and pats my back like he did when I was younger. "I'm sorry," he mumbles. "I should have listen to you."
