Katia and Liam found a furnished apartment to rent in Venice Beach. She said she didn't want anything too over the top and she loved Venice. It was quaint. It was quiet. And she could be more at ease, more herself. They discussed a house, but she made him realize that if they were going to make England their permanent home, then it didn't really pay to rent a whole house. They wouldn't need that much room, especially if they weren't going to be in California for an extended period of time. It also gave her a little more peace of mind that they wouldn't be sharing the same dwelling as her sister. It would help to ease her fears and jealousy over her sister and the fear of them always maybe doing something. She couldn't help but think that either one of them might falter again.
They went to lunch to celebrate their new digs.
"Liam, I've been thinking about the wedding too."
"And what have you been thinking about it?" he asked as he took a drink of his beer.
"I don't want to get married on the beach," she said. "That's...that's my sister's thing. Not mine. I really appreciate her willingness to give us a venue given the circumstances at the time but...."
"It's alright, cupcake," he said reaching for her hand and giving her a smile. "And you're right, the beach is Kaia's thing. I mean, Morocco is her thing too and Zayn pulled it all together. Morocco and a beach. What do you have in mind?"
"I'm not really sure, to be honest. Any ideas?"
"I just want what you want for our wedding."
She rolled her eyes. "You're a big help," she said.
Bruce was walking along after he left his attorneys office. It was a beautiful day and he decided to stop at his favorite cafe.
"Well, if it isn't my beautiful daughter," he said when he saw Katia.
Katia looked up. "Bruce, what are you doing here?"
"I had some business to take care of and I eat here all the time," he said. "Mind if I join you?"
"No, not at all," Katia said. "Liam, you don't mind do you?"
"No, of course not," Liam said as he watched Bruce sit down. He hated to admit how nervous he felt around the man. Like he was always watching him, judging him for his affair with Kaia.
Bruce held up his hand to the waitress who immediately brought him a glass of wine.
"I guess you do come here often," Katia said with a giggle.
Bruce smiled at her. "So what brings you two downtown?"
"We just signed a lease on an apartment in Venice," Liam said and reached for Katia's hand and smiled at her. "Headed here to have some lunch to celebrate."
"I'm sure that will put your mind at ease a little more, buttercup. Being out of your sister's spotlight," he said as he sipped his wine. "Her shadow."
Liam shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He couldn't help but wonder if Bruce was the one that had seemed to push the issue of them moving out of Zayn and Kaia's house.
She smiled. "It does. She didn't even seem all that mad about it when I told her," she said. She wasn't sure if she should mention that Kaia had requested a copy of their mother's accident report. She wondered if Bruce had even seen it.
"So what else have you two been up to?" Bruce asked.
Katia glanced at Liam and then at her father. "I want to change the wedding venue," she said. "I don't want to get married on the beach by Kaia's house. And we were just about to discuss where."
