The young boy Armin Arlert had a dream. A dream to one day venture outside the walls, to explore the world beyond. To discover the lands filled of ice, to discover the mountains of sand, to discover the damp rainforest, and especially to discover the Ocean, a vast body of water than stretches out far beyond the horizon.

Ever since Armin found one of his grandfather's books that was hidden away in his attic, a particular book filled with the many things that could exist beyond the birdcage humanity was trapped inside like the cattle they are, he's dreamed to explore it all with his best friend Eren Yeager. They promised to see it all together. Once the Titans are gone, once Humanity is finally free.

He didn't just share these thoughts and ideas with Eren-- that Humanity can't live behind these massive 50 meter high walls forever, that won't day humans will have to once again live outside. He had mentioned it to the other kids on the block. But they didn't like his ideas one bit. And so, they would beat at him, hoping that would shut him up. But it didn't work. Nothing would work.

The reasons the bullies abused Armin for having his strong beliefs was simple-- they were afraid. Afraid of going beyond the walls, where only death seemed to have waited. And they pummeled Armin because they can. The strong preys down upon the weak. Armin knew this, and was able to understand the very concept quite clear. But still, it was wrong of them.

Often if Eren and Mikasa happened to be around, they would always beat the bullies back for laying their filthy paws down on Armin. In the end, the bullies usually backed off, especially because of Mikasa, being as scary and violent as she was.

Eren and Mikasa would always help Armin, come to his rescue when he needed saving. Armin would accept their help, but he felt they were not equals-- he hated how weak he was and how he always needed protection. He wished that he could be strong enough to be on equal standings alongside his friends. To actually be worth something.

But to Armin, those things seemed impossible to accomplish. So he tried to not dwell on it too much. If he let this problem take over him, his friends would worry. And he didn't want to tell them of these insecurities of his. It would be humiliating.

But no matter how much the bullies beaten him, no matter how many of the kids would try to bring him down, he stayed firm to his beliefs and dreams and didn't let it falter or change. After all, he made a promise with his best friend Eren-- they both promised each other that they would explore the Ocean and whatever else awaits them behind these walls. And it was a promise he intended to keep.
