The next day, the woman and Armin set off towards a small town called Fort Justice. The two walk along side each other for quite some time. Suddenly, Armin begins to speak again.
"I don't understand why we aren't moving faster." He says softly. "Because we still have supplies to carry. We'll reach there soon enough." She replies.
"No, I don't think so. This place is crawling with infected and they keep getting closer every minute." Armin adds. "Then we need to speed things up." The woman agrees.
So while carrying the supplies, Armin and the woman quickens the pace to the town of Fort Justice. Armin and the woman arrive at the fort after walking for several hours. They both enter the gate and wait outside.
"Well, I guess we finally arrived." Armin remarks.
"Yes, we did." The woman answers. "Now then, we should get started on fixing this place." The woman says. "Right." Armin responds. The woman turns around and walks over to a nearby table and sits down.
"But before all of that, you still haven't told me about this town. Is this your home?" Armin asked in wonder. Normally this woman doesn't say all too much, but whenever she does open her mouth, not much sense comes out. But even so...
The woman answers with a nod. "It is my home. I've lived here since I was born."
"Oh, really? Where were you born?" Armin asks. "This town isn't mine. It's not even my family's home. My mother died when I was very young, leaving me an orphan."
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that." Apologizes Armin, regretting having asked. He did not want to open any of the woman's old wounds. The woman continues, "So where are you from then?"
"I come from the city of Maria. I lived in a town called Shiganshina." Smiles Armin, nostalgia of the memories coming to him. "How old are you?" The woman asked next.
"I'm sixteen years old." Armin replies. "That's pretty young!" The woman says in surprise. "How long have you been living here?" Armin wondered. "Since I was born." She responds.
"Can you tell me about Fort Justice?" Armin asked. "Fort Justice has been overrun by zombies." The woman explains.
"And... Fort Justice... isn't that, like... the town we are in... right now?" Armin questions in shock, hoping it wasn't true. The woman shakes her head back and fourth. "No, no it's not like that. It's just..."
"What do you mean, what do you mean?" Armin asks in confusion. "The zombies aren't attacking us right now." The woman simply says. "Why aren't they attacking? Zombies always attack upon sighting humans. Unless... The zombies here are... Different?" Armin was having a difficult time wrapping his head around things.
"Well, I don't know exactly how they're different, but the zombies here are definitely different than those in your town. The ones in your town...They look more feral and aggressive." Explains the woman.
"They also seem to be able to speak human language." Armin is not surprised at her answer. "Well, that would make sense since all zombies were once human." Remarks Armin.
The woman continues. "Do you think there are others like yourself somewhere else in the world?"
"Others like me...? What do you mean?"
"There are other people like me who have survived in this world. We call ourselves 'Zombies' because we've lost most of our minds due to the infection." The woman explains in order to paint the picture for Armin.
Armin's eyes grow upon learning the truth. The truth this woman concealed from him. That she was a infected. But... wait, no. She never concealed it. That's what she was trying to explain to him the night before... but he simply lacked understanding and did not realize it at the time.
This was bad. Armin can't stay here. If he does, he can risk himself becoming infected. And that is a chance that he cannot take.
"Do you... Do you know of a cure?" Armin asked, despite knowing the odds it would be. The woman answers, "Yes, yes there is a cure for this disease. But it requires someone to administer it and we can't find anyone willing to do so."
"What does it mean for someone to administer it?" Armin questions further. "It means that they will die soon after administering it, but then they'll live again as a zombie." The woman answers.
"So... basically what your telling me... the cure to turning all zombies back into humans... is for someone to administer the cure and to become a zombie?" Armin wanted to make sure he understood this right.
The woman responds, "That's correct."
"If it's true... is there any evidence to what you say?" Armin questions. "I found some medical books from the military base where the doctor who discovered the cure worked. He said that he only got one patient out of hundreds to try it before giving up." The woman explains.
"Wait... does this mean... the millitary has been keeping the truth behind the cure secret from us?! But why?!" Armin demands.
"Because they want to keep their own population alive! That's why!" The woman exclaims."To keep their own population alive?! Folly! How long have you been cooped up in this house of yours?! Humanity is dying and is on the brink of extinction!! What good would it do keeping this information from us, huh?! Absolutely nothing!!" Armin barks, enraged.
The woman rubs her forehead in frusteration. "Look, I need you to help me get rid of these zombies. If you're not going to help me, then I guess I'll just have to kill them myself."
"What the hell? What are you going on about? That's why I fucking came here! I wouldn't be asking you about a cure if I didn't want to save the human race!! But who's side are on? Humans or Zombies?" Armin glares.
"Both." The woman answers. Having recieved this answer, Armin understood now. This woman... she wants to save not just humanity, but zombies. Because zombies were once people. But... can that truly mean that as for the people who have turned, that it is not already too late to save them?
"Well, which one should I help?" The woman asked. Armin was deep in thought before spilling out...
"Look. I don't care what I have to do. Just tell me how to save everyone from facing extinction. If you would just tell me, I'll do it. I don't care what it is I have to do. I just want this bloodshed to be over."
"Alright, alright... Now let's go." says the woman and walks towards the door. Armin and the lady walks outside and notices the zombies approaching them.
"Are they to be trusted or do I kill them?" Ask Armin, prepared to fight if he needs to. "Kill them." Says the woman before running away with a bunch of zombies following close behind her.
"Tsk, she tricked me after all. It's no wonder none of what she was saying made any sense." Armin grits his teeth, regretting having ever trusted her to begin with.
That dastardly woman tricked Armin into entering a zombie zone and gave him false hope that there really was a known cure. And now he might risk getting torn limb from limb, killed, or maybe even infected.
Sometimes it is only best to trust no one but yourself.
