It was another ordinary and peaceful day in the town of Shiganshina. Today was Saturday, the start of the weekend for Armin Arlert. Armin's parents were out, as busy as usual with business. Having nothing better to do, Armin gives Kiyomi a call.
Kiyomi is a girl among his best friends he enjoys hanging out with and talking to. Armin decided he would spend his day playing video games. If there's anything Armin and Kiyomi have in common, they're nerds.
Armin chuckles at the thought when an old memory returns. Kiyomi, upon learning her and Armin's similarity, titled themselves the, "Nerdo's".
The remembrance always, causes a smile to curl up on his lips. Such old but fond memories of the past... But despite those memories having took place a long time ago, Kiyomi really hasn't changed much since then.
If anything, she has grown smarter and stands up for herself more than she did as a kid. Kiyomi was naive as a child, and it was because she was always, "Too nice" people often took advantage of her.
Always, Armin had to be the one to rescue her whenever she gotten into trouble with kids or grown ups. Armin was actually the one who introduced Kiyomi to the world of not just video games, but novels.
First, they started out playing PlayStation 2 games along with handheld D.S games. Armin thought Kiyomi everything about each game so she could fully understand how to immerse herself into the world without having to deal with complications, such as forgetting or not knowing how certain controls worked or other.
When they first started out, Armin tried reading the booklet guide books to Kiyomi. Each and every page before starting the video game.
And boy, did Kiyomi HATE having to wait and be read the directions! She always did love hearing Armin's soft and gentle voice read anything to her.
But geez, five or ten pages of directions was so boring to Kiyomi, she didn't think she'd survive long enough to be given the chance to live long enough to try out the video game!
This always gave Armin a good laugh, even back then. But shortly after discovering the girls dread for booklet directions, Armin figured a different way to tell Kiyomi directions without boring her to near death!
Instead of reading the whole booklet to Kiyomi all at once... he left the booklet inside the games case, and he informed her the directions step by step as Kiyomi learned to play the game. (Kiyomi would basically play a new game and while playing, if she didn't understand something accurately, Armin would help guide her)
Kiyomi enjoyed this method a hundred times more. The other way was far too boring for her. By the time she'd reach page 3, she would lose her focus!
After being introduced into the world of gaming, Armin introduced Kiyomi to the world of books. First they started out with Manga (Kid Manga such as Pokemon since they are still only young children at the time) and as Kiyomi got quicker and quicker at reading those, as her imagination grew, Armin introduced the girl to Novels such as, "The Magic Tree House" and, "Because of Winn Dixie".
Kiyomi originally felt like Novels were basically pages full of nothing but plain words. But with Armin's help, she was able to discover that novels were more than just words-- it was an entryway to a whole new world! The perfect escape from reality.
Life was rather harsh to Armin and Kiyomi since the very beginning. But whenever they play a video game, or read a book... it's like the two runs away from the world together, and stumbles upon a world full of adventure and joy. They can forget all about their worries and fears when they immerse themselves into a video game or book.
Backyard fences and School walls always cages children like them, away from exploring the world. (Unless your lucky enough to go on a school field trip or your parents treat you to a vacation trip) Their freedom stripped away.
But the adults do this to protect them from the peril of the world. Because children are yet to be wise and strong enough to survive in such a dangerous and mercyless world-- full of danger, trickery, hate, and war.
Only the strong survive. Armin was aware of this principal and understood it well. So he doesn't blame the adults for wrapping kids like them into invisible walls that most children, are unaware of.
Most children born into this world may or may not already have high expectations expected of them shortly after they reach the age of understanding.
When you reach the age of understanding, is when you understand the words of the adults and children around you.
When you reach the age of understanding is when you understand what you see and the simple things that happen to you. (Depending on what happens)
When you reach the age of understanding is when you start learning things such as talking, standing, and walking.
The age of understanding is when you become a toddler who may or may not, be allowed an education in learning-- Preschool.
It took some time while Armin progressed in Elementary, he learned of the way the world worked. And he learned of the barriers the children were trapped within without knowing.
Kiyomi was among the lot who thought nothing of the decisions and rules decided by her peers. But why should she?
It was for the best. Nothing was wrong with these kids, including Armin himself, being within the safety barrier. It's only until they became strong and wise enough to enter the world that awaited them. Until they reach adulthood...
