Got your chin held high and you feel just fine

'cause you do

What you're told

But inside your heart it is black and it's hollow and it's cold

Somehow I had managed to get through the first few rounds of the Sports Festival. I had no idea how I had done it. We had all made it to the second round, but then Aizawa and Shirakumo dropped out during the second round. Somehow Yamada and I had made it through, even if we just barely made the cut.

The last round was basically a tournament. Every student was up against another student. I was up against Tensei Iida first and I already knew it would be my demise. Iida was a straight A student and he was also one of the best when it came to training. He was also way too focussed, so it would be difficult to distract him with an illusion. All I could try to do was confuse him by creating illusions of myself.

And that would take a lot of energy out of me and wouldn't really keep him off my back for too long.If I attacked him he'd quickly figure out the illusion and he was definitely stronger than me. The only real chance I had was to catch him by surprise, but he was just so fast that it would get difficult.

I took a deep breath and stretched a little more. Just in case. I still had like 5 minutes until the fight and I was nervous. I felt like my opponent was just way, way better than me. I felt alone, down here in the changing room, all by myself. Aizawa and Shirakumo had come down to wish me luck earlier, but they had gone to "find a good spot, so we can cheer you and Yamada on", according to Shirakumo.

I sighed. I knew I'd just get beaten up there. I gave the actual fight five minutes, if not less. And then I'd be in pain for a week, with only two days to recover from it. And it would suck, because we'd have to go and do P.E. again. I was beginning to wonder how long I could go on with this hero course thing, when I heard a knock at the door. I looked up in surprise and then saw the time.

"(L/N), come on, you're up." I heard the voice of our teacher. I gulped audibly and walked up to the door opening it. My heart was beating fast and I felt like I was going to faint any second.

I just knew there was no way I could win this. Right now I felt like I could barely even activate my quirk because I was so nervous about this fight. At least I knew that Iida would be fair and not go too hard on me. If I had gotten paired up with Sensoji I would have been more worried.

I took a deep breath and stepped out onto the field. I could hear the announcer say something, but the sound was so weirdly distorted in the middle of the arena that I had no idea what was going on. I just kept walking onto the field where a teacher was waiting for us to explain the rules and make sure we got everything.

I heard what she was saying, but the words didn't register in my head. Iida seemed so focussed and calm, I just knew that he had a strategy against me. I kept thinking about what illusion I should use against him... I could make it look like the line was further away than it actually was, but then he'd probably still push me out of bounds first. Why did it have to be Iida?

"Alright, get on your side." the teacher said. I dragged my feet back to my side of the arena. It got quiet, as everyone waited for the signal for us to start fighting. I thought I could hear something that sounded like Shirakumo's voice, but they were too far away for me to hear what they were saying.

"GO!" the teacher shouted. Oh shit, oh fuck, I was not prepared for this. This was too fast. I quickly activated my quirk and jumped to the side, keeping my eyes on Iida. I gave him the illusion that I was still standing there, not sure what to do. He had no idea of my actual position unless he was listening real close.

Iida raced over to where he thought I was standing and was trying to push me out of bounds. Of course he ran right through the illusion of me and that's when he knew something was up. I was still somewhat banking on his momentum. Maybe he'd be unable to stop until he was out of bounds, but I was wrong. He managed to stop just before, looking around himself suspiciously.

He slowly stepped away from the line and I tried to move up closer to him whenever he made a step, so he couldn't hear where I was walking. It worked pretty well for a while, when I felt my eyes getting tired. Shit. Shit, shit, shit. If I blinked now, my quirk would deactivate and he'd be able to see where I really was.

I blinked. Fuck. When I opened my eyes again I saw Iida smiling quickly and running in my direction. I quickly jumped to the side and stretched out my leg which made him fall over it and made him land really damn close to the line, considering the speed at which he was going.

But he wasn't out of bounds yet. He quickly rolled away from the line and got up again. I was giving him an illusion of me standing right in front of him, hoping to somehow distract him, but he just got up and ran to where I was standing.

I tried ducking out of the way, but he caught onto my arm and more or less threw me out of bounds. When I landed on the hard ground, all air was knocked out of my lungs. I heard a ringing in my ears and closed my eyes in pain. There would be some nasty bruises on my back tomorrow around this time.

"(L/N) is out of bounds, Iida moves on to the next round!" I heard the judge say and the crowd began to cheer. I opened my eyes again and was blinded by the bright sun. I still felt like I could barely move. Honestly, I just wanted some guys to come and carry me out on a damn stretcher. But that's not what happened. Instead I saw Iida leaning over me with a big smile on his face, holding out his hand to me.

"That was a good fight. You nearly got me there a few times!" he said. I was a little confused, but I took his hand and he pulled me up to my feet. Why was he being nice to me? He was the class rep and I was that kid that always got detention. My head still felt dizzy and my back hurt like hell.

"Are you alright?" he asked me.

"I uh... yeah, I guess. I'll be alright once I get to Recovery Girl. Uhm... thanks. For helping me up and all." I replied. This was weird. I literally never talked to Iida, unless it was him giving out to me about being in trouble again.

"Okay. Well, I guess we better go now, the next fight's gonna start soon." Iida said and walked away towards his changing room. I made my way towards my own room when I saw two people jumping up and down and waving at me. Those were... Aizawa and Shirakumo. I smiled when I recognized and ran up to them.

"Oh my God, (L/N), you did amazing!" Shirakumo shouted down at me. I laughed and shook my head.

"I still lost, though. The whole thing was over in less than a minute!" I replied. Shirakumo laughed loudly.

"Oh come on, you still did really well! At the beginning none of us would have thought we'd get into the final round and look at you and Yamada! Both in the final round and you almost beat Iida a few times!" he replied. I looked back at the arena and saw the teacher tapping her foot impatiently.

"Bullshit. Anyway, I gotta go. I'll see you in a minute." I replied.

"Hurry up, you'll miss Yamada's fight." Aizawa said calmly. He didn't seem as excited as Shirakumo, but I knew he was. He had something that resembled a smile on his face and that probably meant he was more excited about this than Shirakumo. And that meant something.

"Alright, I'll catch up with you guys soon!"
