With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we'd never see an end to it all
"So anyway, it's really not that difficult to climb up to my window and knock at it. So if y'all ever wanna hang out at night, you know how to get to me." I said laughing. It was 3 in the morning and I hadn't slept since 6 yesterday morning. That was almost 24 hours awake. Which was one of my personal bests.
My parents had gone away on a weekend trip and that meant I had the entire house to myself. Not that I was having people over. But it meant I could go and finally have that sleepover with Oboro, Hizashi and Shouta. But I had also gotten a summer job to save up some money and that job meant getting out of bed at an ungodly hour. So I headed out to hang with my friends right after finishing up work.
We went to the city, we watched a movie, we ordered takeaway and now we were just talking, barely staying awake after we had about five cups of coffee and counting. The conversation had gotten really deep and personal at around 2 in the morning, but now we were just having dumb ideas.
"We should do that. We'll all head to (F/N)'s garden and knock on her window, so she'll come and hang out with us. Like one of those cheesy movies." Hizashi replied, sipping more of his coffee.
He really shouldn't be having any more of that after he had gotten palpitations earlier and thought he was going to die. But then he got tired again and we figured we couldn't really stop him from having another cup.
"And then what?" I asked, looking over at Shouta and wondering how he hadn't woken up from Hizashi's loud talking yet. He had fallen asleep some time around 1 and we had to wake him up a few times because he was tossing and turning so much he was about to fall off the couch and hurt himself.
"We should do something illegal. That'd be fun." Oboro suggested with a big mischievous grin.
"You wanna be a hero, illegal things shouldn't be fun for you." we heard Shouta mumbling. We all looked over at him. He still had his face buried in pillows and the blanket was loosely draped over him.
"How long have you been awake?" Hizashi wanted to know, looking a little freaked out at this. Shouta yawned and sat up slowly, pulling the blanket over his head and wrapping it around his shoulders. He leaned against the wall and pulled his legs up to his chest, just so he could wrap himself up inside his blanket more. He yawned again. Shouta truly was the king of relaxation.
"Just a couple of minutes. And I was kind of half-asleep for a good while, too." he replied finally.
"You're unbelievable, Shouta." I said with a grin and shook my head. I wished I could sleep like that.
"Unbelievably boring! Come on, Shou, it's not like we're going to rob someone. We'll just do something a little illegal. You know, something that's not gonna hurt anyone." Oboro reasoned.
"Things are illegal for the sole reason that they hurt people, Oboro." Shouta replied and looked around the room groggily, as if he still wasn't quite sure where he was and why he was here.
"Damn, Shou, why don'tcha hang out with Iida instead? You'd be agreeing on everything." Hizashi said and rolled his eyes.
"Iida is just way too positive, no thanks." Shouta muttered.
"There are things that are illegal and don't hurt people..." Oboro protested. Shouta raised an eyebrow.
"Well, let's assume you are right - which you're not - and think about this. Exactly what would you want to do? And it can't hurt anyone." he asked him. Oboro was about to say something, but then shut his mouth again. He had his thinking face on now - it was that face he made when he was thinking about something really hard and it looked like it came straight out of a comic.
Hizashi, Shouta and I had no clue whether he did it on purpose or subconsciously, but it was really amusing. He had his index finger propped up against his chin or resting on his lips, it looked like he was holding five spoons of rice in his mouth and he crinkled his forehead. His eyes would look more focussed than ever. After a while he gave up and looked back at Shouta with a grin.
"I have no idea." he said and laughed.
"Well, that was a waste of time, you criminal mastermind. Can't believe that's what I woke up for." Shouta replied.
"I mean, we could always just go for a midnight walk or something. I'm pretty sure my parents wouldn't be able to hear it if I climbed out of the window at night." I suggested with a shrug.
"Why would you wanna take a walk in the middle of the night?" Oboro asked. I was going to answer, but Hizashi knew what I meant and chimed in immediately. I never knew he was passionate about midnight walks.
"I'm glad you asked! The town in the middle of the night is like... a completely different place than it is during the day. The streets are empty, everything is really quiet and the only noises you really hear are traffic lights and some of those old-fashioned billboards. It's super creepy, but also super relaxing. Midnight walks literally give me the best vibes. We have to go on one!"
"Why don't you become a salesman or something instead of a hero, Zashi?" Shouta muttered.
"Woah, why don't you go back to sleep if you're only around to be grumpy?" Oboro shot back and was hit in the head with a pillow.
"I thought it was my job to be grumpy around here..." Shouta said.
"No, no, no, it was your job to be the voice of reason!" I objected. Honestly, no one had ever mentioned that Shouta had to be grumpy.
"Well, the voice of reason sometimes is grumpy, alright?" he answered. I rolled my eyes laughing.
"Is there something that might make the voice of reason a little less grumpy, perhaps?" I asked.
"Coffee. Coffee might work." Shouta admitted with a shy and barely noticeable smile on his face. I nodded and got up to get him a cup. He seemed way too cozy to move right now anyway.
Thankfully all the awkwardness had disappeared after we had all met up again during the summer break. We still had a few weeks without school left, so Oboro, Hizashi, Shouta and I decided to make the most of it and hung out almost every day. My parents finally met them and eased up some of their restrictions for me (which didn't stop me from breaking their rules, but they liked to think that anyway).
And somehow things were strangely back to normal, just as if that stupid game had never happened. I had to admit that I was a little sad that nothing really had come off the whole thing (yet), but I was glad that we were all still friends, just like we used to be. Losing any of them was what I was most afraid of.
I was just done making the coffee when the three of them had gotten up and were getting dressed. I slowly carried the cup over and watched them put on their shoes and jackets. Oboro was grabbing his keys.
"What are you doing?" I asked them.
"We're going for a midnight walk right now. Come on, get dressed, we're leaving!" Oboro announced.
"But... what about Shou's coffee?" I wanted to know. If they were going to let that coffee get cold, I'd lose it.
"I'll drink it on the way. Here, I'll take it, so you can go and put your shoes on." Shouta offered and carefully took the cup out of my hands. Our hands touched and I looked up at him out of reflex. I was kind of expecting him to apologize and get flustered, but he just smiled at me and took the cup.
"Smells good, thanks." was all he said. I nodded and sat down on the floor to put on my shoes.
"Shou, please tell me you're not going out wrapped in a blanket." Hizashi commented. I heard Shouta slurping his coffee.
"And why shouldn't I? This is comfy." he replied.
"Shouta, we're leaving the house! People are gonna see us!" Hizashi protested loudly. I heard Shouta scoff a little.
"You just said there weren't any people outside at all. Like it or not, I'm going out with the blanket or I'm not going."
