Always on the run
Destiny is the rising sun
Shouta had gotten more and more quiet as we were walking home together. He seemed nervous about meeting my parents. Like, extremely nervous. I mean, I was pretty nervous, too. My parents were usually pretty relaxed, but sometimes they just had their weird bad days.
"You okay?" I asked him.
"Yeah, sure." he said and shrugged.
"You're not okay." I stated.
"Why wouldn't I be? I'm fine. Everything's fine." he answered with a sigh and started messing with his hair again.
"Come on, you can admit that you're nervous to meet them. It'll be okay, though, I can't think of a reason why they wouldn't like you." I told him. I could immediately think of a million things that could go wrong, but I pushed them all to the back of my head. Surely nothing bad would happen.
"Really? You sure?" he asked, looking up. He had his usual apathetic look, but it seemed less stable than usual. He was nervous and if you knew him well enough, you could easily tell.
"Yeah, I'm sure. Come on, we're almost there. They're really looking forward to meeting you." I said.
"(F/N), wait!" Shouta protested, as I was about to walk up to the house. I turned back, looking at him. He was full on nervous now. I never thought I'd see him like that - he usually looked like nothing could get any sort of reaction out of him. Like he was generally indifferent to everything.
"What is it?" I wanted to know. He looked down at his feet.
"I... uh... I am nervous. Really nervous. Come here." he muttered and pulled me tight against himself. I chuckled and wrapped my arms around his waist and buried my head in his chest.
"You could have just said if you wanted a hug, Shou." I said with a chuckle and planted a kiss on his cheek.
"I didn't want a hug..." he mumbled and looked away embarrassed. I let go of him and brushed a strand of his hair out of his face.
"Sure you didn't. Come on, Shou. Let's get it over with, huh?" I said and pulled him towards the door. While I was still looking for my keys to open the door, when someone else opened it from the inside.
I looked up and saw my mum standing there. She looked nervous, but also excited to finally meet Shouta. She had heard a good bit about him after all. I smiled at her and grabbed Shouta's hand.
"Hi, mum. This is Shouta." I introduced him and he came a little closer until he was standing next to me. He took a deep breath and looked up at my mum.
"Hi, I'm Shouta Aizawa. I, uh... I go to U.A. with (F/N)." he explained and looked to the side nervously.
"It's nice to meet you, (F/N) has told me a lot about you. Come on in, you two." my mum replied with a soft smile. It seemed to put Shouta at ease a little, because he didn't look as tense anymore and even smiled a little.
"Thanks." he said quietly and stepped inside after me, taking off his shoes. Being around him felt kind of weird, when my mother was right there, watching us. But there was no turning back now.
"Would you like some tea, Aizawa? (F/N)?" she asked us. I just nodded with a big grin on my face.
"Yes, thank you, that would be nice, Mrs (L/N)." Shouta replied, so quickly he almost stumbled over his own words.
"Well, go on in, then. (F/N), your father's in the living room." my mum told us. I nodded and grabbed Shouta's hand. He looked pretty nervous again, as he followed me to the living room.
"Hey, dad, I brought Shouta with me today!" I said, as I walked into the room, smiling proudly. Who wouldn't have been proud to show off Shouta as their boyfriend? My dad put his newspaper down and gave Shouta a stern look, which caused him to gulp audibly, as we sat down.
"Good afternoon, Sir, it's good to meet you. My name is Shouta Aizawa." he introduced himself with a bow. He was so nervous that it sounded like he had learned these lines by heart and was just reciting them now.
"Sit down, Aizawa, my name's (Y/F/N). So you're in the same class as my little girl?" he asked, as Shouta sat down.
"Yes, Sir, we're both in class 1-A, in the hero course." he answered. He glanced over at me nervously and I quickly grabbed his hand under the table and squeezed it tightly. Maybe it would help.
"So what's your Quirk then?" my dad wanted to know. I felt Shouta intertwine his fingers with mine. I knew he was self-conscious when it came to his Quirk, but it wasn't too weird of my dad to ask about this. He could be a little blunt when it came to screening the people I hung out with.
"It's called Erasure, it... it erases other people's Quirks." Shouta said quietly. I could see my dad giving me a look, but thankfully he didn't seem too disapproving. I wished my mother would hurry up with the tea, before this got really awkward. I knew how my dad could get sometimes.
"That's... interesting. I'm sure you'd be good support with a Quirk like that..." he replied and I rolled my eyes.
"Dad!" I scolded him.
"Uh, anyway... how are your grades? How do you find the hero course?" he changed the topic.
"Oh, my grades are alright, I'd say. I'm quite content with them..." Shouta answered and perked up a little.
"He's being humble. He's one of the best in our class." I chimed in with a grin. Shouta looked down with a tiny smile on his face. He knew just as well as I did that I was right. But of course he didn't want to brag.
"She's flattering me, I have no idea what she's talking about." he replied, which made my dad give him a look that was slightly more gentle.
"Well, I suppose it would be stupid to ask you what you want to do after school. What about your parents? Is either of them working as a hero, too?" he wanted to know then. Shouta took a deep breath.
"No, Sir, they're not." Shouta replied, clearly uncomfortable talking about his parents. I still didn't really know exactly what was going on in his family, because he didn't like to talk about it. But I also knew that my dad wouldn't let go of the topic, now that he had seen that Shouta wasn't too happy talking about it.
"Oh, really? What do they do, then? And what part of town do you live in?" my dad asked curiously. I gave him a look, trying to tell him to cut it out, but of course he would pretend not to see it.
"Oh, I, uh... we actually live in an apartment in one of the high-rise buildings just a few streets down." Shouta replied nervously. The high-rise buildings weren't exactly fancy. They were mostly social housing.
"I see. So what do your parents do for a living?" my father asked, clearly curious about this. I could already see the judgmental look in his eyes, but I couldn't believe he was actually going there.
"They're... they're not working." Shouta answered, lowering his head. I squeezed his hand tighter.
"Oh? What do you mean? Surely, they must be paying the rent somehow." my dad wanted to know.
"Just let it go, dad." I said quietly under my breath. Shouta sighed next to me and smiled at me - a sad smile.
"It's alright, (F/N). Your dad's worried about you, I get that." he replied and squeezed my hand under the table, before looking back up at my father.
"They're unemployed. They're on state benefits, both of them." he answered. My dad looked somewhat shocked at him openly admitting that and I was shocked that my dad kept on asking. There was an uncomfortable silence all around. It wasn't like I cared about any of that, but I knew my dad had his opinions. And it would be an uphill battle to make him think Shouta was good for me now.
