Chapter Fifty- Nine : Mother's Love

"Janna and Tom, what's got you late again?" Star asked once more while we were seated on the school garden. I know. It's been a while.
We'd probably have to evacuate inside the school's cafeteria since the temperature was dropping as days neared close to December and before we could blink, this place would completely be inhabited with snow surrounding the ground.
Ugh. I hate cafeterias. But then again, I have these two with me so it'll be less miserable.
"We woke up late," Tom replied, stabbing his tempura with a fork and scooped up some bits of rice on his spoon and in one mouthful he chewed on it.
I couldn't help but let out a small, faint smile. Well, in that little time, I had managed to at least cook something for the both of us.
Star raises her brow, sniffing something more. Well, Star is like a radar. She seems to know a lot of gossips and can sense something out of anything that seemed innocent. She darts her ocean coloured eyes to me and to Tom, then to our lunch boxes that were identical.
"Is it me?" she mused, cocking up a brow like an antenna with signals. "---or you two seemed...different," she trailed off, squinting her eyes in suspicion.
"Tell me, you two have been living together?" she widens her eyes, then there she goes with her crazy assumption. Her maniac eyes were enough to tell. "--are you guys secretly married or what?! Is this like one of those novels where you guys get arranged marriage a---"
"You're so far-fetched," I snicker, casting a side-glance at Tom who seemed to be amused. "--well one thing led to another and I was the one preparing lunch for both of us."
I told her about our parents going on a short vacation to who knows where--leaving us with crumpled cash and some ingredients enough to feed two people for a week. I specifically left out the part where we played or when we ended up sleeping on the couch. Knowing Star, she might go ballistic and her fangirling will just make things awkward.
I was already feeling uneasy when I'm with him, what more when Star adds salt to the injury? She nods in agreement, then leans back on the grass. "Well, you guys are lucky. I want to also have a neighbour I can engage with."
"What about your neighborhood?" I questioned. I never really asked her about what her family does or where she lives and details like that. Maybe because I didn't need to know or maybe we just didn't have the chance to.
She sighs, her mood turning sour as she clasps a hand under her chin with a pout. "Well, it's just that kids there have their own groups and it's compact I tell you."
"---if I tried to converse with them, I'd feel like I'm barging in," her lips tugged up as she twirled the roots of the grass with her fingers. "--so that's out of the question."
"Have you tried asking them?" Tom replied.
Star flickers her gaze to him. "Not really. I mean I know that's what's going to happen."
"You're like an energizer," I interjected. "---why would you be intimidated by something as small as this? You're like friends with almost everyone."
"I guess I am," she flashes me a small smile. "--well, that's no biggie. Anyway, how are you guys doing with your partners?"
"We haven't started," I stated, closing the lid of my lunchbox and tucked it inside my dark coal coloured backpack that had less things inside--except my phone, earphones, comb and some school materials. I could never understand why people bring so many things. I guess I'm just bland or simple in that matter.
