as marina was eating dinner, she was complaining to laura, hayden, and amelia about having to do charity's rounds.

"if she had asked me, i would hex remus into oblivion." laura said. "that's what charity said." marina muttered. "i would do it, but i don't like him." amelia said, making everyone laugh.

marina looked to the professor's table, made sure nobody was looking in her direction, and quickly walked over to the slytherin table.

stella was sitting with regulus black, a third year, and severus snape, a fifth year, whom marina hated. "move," she said to snape. stella turned around to see her and elbowed snape. he rolled his eyes but moved over to make room for marina, who sat down.

"what's up?" stella asked as the took a bite of her turkey. "i'm doing rounds with remus lupin tonight." marina said, making stella choke on her chicken. regulus quickly patted her back, and she stopped.

after thanking him, she turned to marina. "why are doing rounds? you're not even a prefect!" she said in disbelief. "charity burbage can't, and, of course, she does her rounds with lupin." marina said, putting her head in her hands.

"why do you have to do it?" she asked, handing a piece of bread to marina, who gratefully took it. "she doesn't really have any friends except for the girls in my dormitory." marina said, her mouth full of bread.

"okay, but why you?" stella asked. "laura would hex him, hayden is afraid of the dark, and amelia doesn't talk to anyone." marina said, shrugging. "thats stupid. just don't go." stella said simply.

"i have to, i made a deal with charity." marina said, regretting it now. "well, you're just stupid." stella said, causing marina to hit her on the shoulder.

"well, before i get caught by slughorn, i should probably go back to my table." marina sighed, standing up. "have fun on your date!" stella called as she walked away.

that night, charity didnt come back to the dormitory, and her prefect badge was out on her bed.

"where do you think she went?" amelia asked. she was lying on her bed, studying a herbology book. "i don't want to know." laura, who was painting a sunset, said. hayden, who was finishing up sewing her pink and white scarf, nodded.

"what time do i go out?" she asked. "charity always left ten minutes after we got back, so i would go soon." amelia said. marina groaned and fell on the bed. "maybe it won't be so bad." hayden said soothingly.

"i'm going to hang out with the one guy who hates me more than anyone on this school, but yeah, no, it'll be great, he might even ask me out on a date." marina said, rolling her eyes. "okay, maybe it will be bad." hayden said sheepishly.

after ten minutes, marina got up and grabbed charity's badge, pinning it to her robe. "i'll be back." she sighed. "don't die!" laura said as she left. "good luck, mar." hayden said. "have fun!" amelia sang.

marina rolled her eyes and quickly walked down the stairs and out of the common room. she made her way down the quiet corridors, the only sound being her feet tapping on the marble floor.

she began reaching the great hall and saw remus. he was leaning against the wall, his arm crossed in front of his chest, looking up.

"finally, you're-" he started, but when he laid eyes on marina he stopped. "phoenix, you're out of bed past curfew." he said, a grin growing on his face. "i'm here as a substitute for charity, lupin. don't flatter yourself thinking i would enjoy this." marina said cooly, flashing charity's prefect badge.

remus rolled his eyes and shoved his hands in his pockets. "where is she?" he asked. "charity? no idea, she didn't say." marina said. "whatever, let's go." remus snapped, turning on his heel and taking big strides. his legs were so long marina had to practically jog to keep up.

"what do even do during rounds?" marina asked. remus scoffed. "of course you don't know." he muttered. she fought the urge to punch him.

"we just walk around the corridors, making sure everyone is where they should be." he explained. he glanced back at marina to see her jogging to keep up, and slowed down a little bit.

"got it." she said. they made eye contact for a second, but marina quickly looked at the ground.

they walked around for a while in dead silence for a long time, turning down random hallways and looking around.

"what happens if we catch someone?" marina asked. "we deduct house points, i suppose. normally, charity does the punishment." remus stated, shrugging.

when they turned the next corner, marina was surpised to see four people dueling in teams of two. there were two slytherins and two gryffindors.

"woah, woah, woah, what's going on here?" marina asked, stepping up. remus pushed her back. "let the real prefect handle this." he said. marina scoffed.

"what are you doing?" remus asked. "he insulted us!" one of the gryffindors said, pointing at one of the slytherins. "no! you insulted slughorn, so we just stood up for him!" the other slytherin said.

"that's enough." remus said. "you two," he said, pointing to the two gryffindors. "go back up to the common room." he finished. "you two," he repeated, now pointing to the others, "five points deducted from your house. now go." he finished. they looked as if they were about to argue but thought against it, and quickly walked away. marina turned to remus, fuming.

"what the hell was that?" she hissed. "just doing my work." remus said, shoving his hands in his pockets. "you didn't take points away from gryffindor, but you took them away from slyterin!" she said, stopping in front of him. even though he was much taller than her, she stood her ground.

"so?" he asked, looking down on her. "it's unfair! you can't just take points from students and not the others. they were both in the wrong." she said. remus just rolled his eyes and walked past her. "slytherins are bad people, phoenix." he said, his back turned.

they didnt talk for the rest of the night, and when they reached the gryffindor common room, remus entered in without saying anything to marina. as she headed back, she realized one thing.

she hated remus lupin more than ever.
