it was finally the day of the masquerade ball, and marina was, of course, running late. the girls had forgotten to get her, so she woke up and realized that her first class had already started.

immediately, she flew out of bed and rushed to her trunk, tossing her hair up into a messy ponytail, threw on her robes, and ran down the steps, her bag almost falling off her shoulder.

marina was running up the stairs when she realized it was monday. it was the first day she would see remus and the marauders after the incident friday. she was dreading it, but, of course, she couldn't slow down, she needed to get to class.

she finally reached the defense against the dark arts classroom and flung the door open, stepping inside. everyone turned around and stared at her, and marina felt herself blushing.

professor merrythought stopped talking and looked at marina oddly. "miss phoenix, why are you late?" she asked. "i'm so sorry professor, i overslept!" marina gasped, walking over to her desk and collapsing in the seat.

"it's alright, we all need our sleep. just try not to oversleep next week." she said kindly. marina nodded, before turning to hayden with an aggravated look. "care to explain why nobody woke me up?" she hissed. hayden stifled a laugh.

"sorry about that, marina." she sighed. "we kind of just forgot. charity was yelling at us." hayden explained. "about what?" she asked. hayden shrugged. "i tune her out now."

marina rolled her eyes and turned her attention to professor merrythought, who was now ranting on about the mentality of defense, something she did the first few weeks of the term every year.

they were halfway through the lesson when she felt a tap on her shoulder. knowing who it was, marina didn't turn around. it happened another time, and she ignored it for a second time, hoping that he would get the hint.

he did not.

on the fourth time she felt tapping, she snapped her body around and looked at remus, who gave her a sheepish smile. she did not return it.

"meet me in the courtyard during lunch? please?" he asked. marina only rolled her eyes and turned around. hayden saw this interaction and gently placed a hand on her shoulder.

remus and peter smiled at one another. she didn't say no.

lunch arrived, and marina decided to walk to the courtyard. but, she did inform felix on this, and he was to hide near them so he could intervene if he needed to.

once marina arrived there, she spotted remus leaning against the wall of the castle. he glanced over at marina and swiftly walked over to her. marina also spotted felix, standing right at one of the big open windows, staring directly at the two.

"marina, hey." remus said. "lupin." marina said coldly, nodding at him. remus' smile wavered slightly, but he took a deep breath and continued on. "i know you're mad about what happened friday."

marina scoffed. "mad? lupin, you said some damn hurtful things, admitted you were using me, and then lied about it to my face!" she snapped. remus dug his hands into his pockets and looked at his converse.

"look, you have a right to be mad. i would be mad if i heard my friend saying something like that. but, can you please hear me out?" he asked, looking back up at her. marina stayed quiet, so remus took that as permission to talk.

"it wasn't me," he said. marina let out a harsh laugh. "oh, yeah, sorry lupin, i completely forgot you had a twin." she said sarcastically. remus shook his head.

"no, seriously marina! it wasn't me. when i finished my classes, i went to the dormitory and fell asleep. i wake up to find none of my friends there, so i set off to find them. i don't know who it was, or what it was, but i can promise you that it wasn't me." remus explained. "have you ever really heard me talk like that"

"yes, actually, for five years." marina hissed. "listen, lupin, just admit that you were, and are, a huge prat." marina said simply. "now, if you'll excuse me, i have actual friends who want me around, so i'll see you later."

marina walked by him and met up with felix, who was creeping up behind remus just in case he needed to hex him. "let's go." marina sighed, wrapping her arm around his and walking inside the castle.

remus watched them go, a sad expression painted on his face.
