"what the hell is a masquerade ball?"

it was the third week of school, and dumbledor had announced that there would be a masquerade ball on halloween.

all marina wanted to do was eat her pudding.

"i hope you all will join us." dumbledor finished as he sat back down. the great hall began to buzz with excitement.

"it's basically a ball where you where masks that cover your eyes." hayden explained to laura, who had asked the question. laura snorted.

"is that supposed to hide your identity?" she asked. "technically, but it never does." marina sighed. "in all the fairytales, people find the love of their life there." amelia added.

"maybe i'll find the man of my dreams!" laura said sarcastically. "well, don't turn now but the man of your dreams is coming this way." hayden said.

laura and marina, despite hayden's warning, turned around to see the marauders heading over to their table. "shit!" laura gasped, quickly turning back to hayden and amelia.

"hello, ladies." sirius sang, sitting next to laura, as the three others stood behind her and marina. remus placed his elbows on her shoulders and placed his chin on her head.

"since when was that a thing?" amelia asked, staring at marina and remus. "we're friends, amelia." remus sighed. marina nodded in agreement.

"so, are you ladies going to find a date to this ball?" james asked. "i will, i'm sure." laura said, crossing her arms in front of her chest. sirius scoffed.

"doll, i wouldn't count on it." he teased, a smirk pulling at his lips. "call me doll again, and see what happens, black." she spat. "feisty." sirius hissed, winking dramatically.

"anyway, i'm assuming hayden and peter are going together?" remus asked before laura could get another word in. the two nodded.

"well, me and lily are going together." james sighed, rubbing his hands together. the group glanced at one another, before bursting out into laughter.

"what's so funny?" james asked, looking at them all with confusion. "prongs, i love you, but evans will not be going with you!" sirius said, clasping a hand on james' shoulder.

"disbelievers push me more." james said, not batting an eye. "real cute." laura muttered sarcastically.

"remus!"

the group looked over and saw charity walking towards them. "oh, godric." remus whispered under her breath. "hey, charity." he said awkwardly, taking his chin and elbows off of marina.

"how've you been?" she asked, looking up at him with eyes that screamed "i'm desperate". "i've been good." he sighed, scratching his neck.

"are you going to the ball?" she asked. remus looked back at his friends with pleading eyes, but they all pretended to be in conversations, though everyone was listening.

"probably, yeah." he sighed, giving in. "want to go together?" she asked, practically pleading with her eyes.

"remus! wow! look at the time!" james gasped, walking over and slinging and arm around his shoulders. "sorry to interrupt this lovely reunion, charity, but we must be getting back to our table."

the four boys quickly left, leaving charity to stand there with a frown on her face, and leaving marina silently laughing.

over the next week, everyone seemed to be getting dates for the ball. laura, marina, and amelia, however, had not.

"i need to get a date." laura said sunday night as marina was brushing her hair. "why?" marina asked, setting down her brush and lying down on laura's bed with her.

"to make sirius jealous!" laura said, sitting up and looking at her as though it was obvious. "that's not a good reason." amelia frowned, leaning against laura's bed.

"well, i'm just going to ask remus to go with me." marina said simply. laura, amelia, and hayden all gasped loudly.

"what? as friends, of course." marina said defensively. "as friends? that's a good joke!" hayden laughed sarcastically, walking over to them.

"we're finally good friends! i don't want to ruin that!" marina explained. laura was staring at her incredulously.

"he's obviously into you, marina." she said. marina shook her head. "no, no he isn't. i'm going to ask him tomorrow morning, as friends."

the next day, marina found the marauders outside, and laura and hayden pushed her towards remus.

"lupin!" she said loudly. remus looked up at her and walked towards her, his hands shoved in his pockets. "am i in trouble?" he asked. marina shook her head.

"want to go to the hall with me?" she asked. the six other friends stopped talking and looked at them, the marauders staring wide-eyed at the two.

remus' eyebrows raised quickly and his heart began racing. he glanced back at his friends, who all nodded, and he quickly looked back at marina.

"no."
