it had finally reached nightfall, and the hogwarts express pulled into hogsmeade.
marina immediately grabbed her stuff, shook laura awake, and raced out of the train, desperate to be back at her second home.
"godric, marina, slow down!" hayden said as the three girls raced after their friend, who seemed to have no intention of slowing down.
marina hopped off the train and raced to the end of the lake, craning her neck to see the castle that looked so magnificent at night.
"marina?"
marina turned around and was met with remus lupin looking at her, his friends nowhere to be seen.
"lupin!" marina said happily, walking over to him with a smile on her face.
remus has grown taller, if that was even possible, over the summer, had apparently pierced his ears, and his hair had grown longer and was very messy.
over the summer, the two had exchanged quite a few letters back and forth, just talking about school and chess and their friends. she had to admit, she felt closer to him than she had before.
"how was your summer?" remus asked, smiling back at her. "it was alright, yours?" she asked. he shrugged, but then grew a mischievous smile.
"what did you get on your o.w.l's?" he asked, shoving his hand in his jeans and pulling out a folded piece of paper, marina assumed to be his exam results.
marina smiled back and grabbed hers out of her backpack. the two swapped and quickly read over one another's.
"all outstanding's?" remus said in a surprised toned. "you too." marina muttered. they looked back up at each other and smirked.
"hm, i guess all of that rivalry those years was for nothing." he sighed as marina handed his paper back. "oh, come off it." marina laughed.
they began walking to the carriages and spotted their friends. sirius and laura were already bickering, james was doing a handshake with amelia, and hayden was hugging peter tightly.
"since when did james and amelia have a handshake?" marina asked remus as they approached them. "no idea." remus sighed.
"marina!" sirius said, turning away from laura and running up to her. "hello, black." marina said as sirius slung an arm around her shoulder. "is there a reason you're being nice?"
sirius shrugged. "just in a good mood, i suppose." he sighed. "get your germs off my friend." laura said sarcastically, grabbing marina's hand and pulling her towards her. sirius blew a raspberry at her.
the eight of them all hopped into a carriage, marina sitting in between hayden and remus.
"i can't wait for this year." james sighed, resting his head on sirius' shoulder, her quickly shrugged it off.
"me either. i'm taking alchemy as well!" marina said happily. "same here." remus said. the two locked eyes and smiled at one another.
"gross, get a room." laura said, making a fake retching sound. marina reached across the carriage and punched her shoulder.
sirius kicked marina. "defending laura, black?" hayden said, raising her eyebrows. "no, of course not, i just like kicking people." sirius snapped, though his cheeks had gone slightly pink. remus snorted.
"you know, marina," remus said, looking back at marina. "i think we should have our study sessions again. those kind of got ruined because of..." he trailed off. "because of charity?" marina asked. "you said it, not me." remus said.
"i'll think about it, lupin." marina said playfully. "like i said, get a room." laura snapped. "i would punch you again, but my leg still hurts from sirius." marina muttered.
"anyway, i'm ready for the quidditch season to begin again." james said. "oh, same here." laura said. "i'm interested to see who will win this year." peter added.
"i'm calling hufflepuff." amelia sang. james, who was next to her, shoved her shoulder with his. "fuck off." he joked.
the carriage finally pulled up to the school, and everyone hopped out, peter offering his hand to hayden, while laura made throw up sounds.
"come on, lovebirds, i'm hungry." laura expressed, leading the group as they made their way inside the castle.
marina stopped walking and looked around, still amazing by how beautiful it was.
"you coming?" remus asked as the group got separated from her. marina snapped her attention back to reality and raced to catch up with her friends.
the students walked into the great hall, and the girls bid goodbye to the boys as they took their regular spots at the hufflepuff table.
charity burbage, another one of their roommates, came up to them and sat down next to hayden, who was very surprised.
"hello." charity said stiffly. the girls nodded hello. "how was your summers?" she asked. "good." they all said in unison in a monotone voice. charity seemed to catch the hint and walked away.
"does the think a summer can change our opinion on her?" laura asked, an incredulous look on her face. "she does every year." marina sighed.
the sorting ceremony was great, and the feast was even better. after everyone had finished, the hufflepuffs made their way to the dormitory, the five girls going up to their room.
marina quickly unpacked her stuff, set her books and plants down on the windowsill, hung her little lights on the bed frame, and took out a picture of her and her parents and taped it to her bed.
this was going to be a good year, she could feel it.
