winter break. a time of calmness and serendipity. classes are finished until the next year and families are reunited. everyone is overwhelmed with joy as they pack their trunks and talk about their traveling plans.

well, everyone except for the sixth year hufflepuff dormitory. nothing can ever go their way. it is almost like all the odds are against them.

"all of the odds are against us!" laura groaned. throwing her socks angrily into her trunk. "why can things never go our way?" marina cried, slamming her trunk shut. "it's almost as if we are in some sad book!" hayden complained. "and the author loves adding twists and drama to every damn chapter." amelia added.

marina had told the girls everything. they were, of course, fuming. even hayden was, and marina knew that she didn't like the two of them being a thing.

"i even tried to talk to him in the corridor but he just ignored me!" she snapped. "he just rolled his eyes and walked right by me like i was the wall! what has gotten into him?"

"charity...did you do something?" laura asked suspiciously, walking over to charity's bed where she was reading. "what? no! i've learned my lesson." she responded defensively, slamming her book shut. "do you have anything to prove it?" hayden asked. charity rolled her eyes.

"every night this week i've been in the library with iris mclaggen." she said. "you can ask him if you need to."

"mclaggen? does felix have a brother?" hayden asked. "nope, iris is his seventh year stuck up cousin." marina explained. "perfect for you, charity!" laura said in a sickening sweet voice. "you are so funny, laura!" charity said sarcastically.

"i will be asking that virus boy if you were with him." she snapped. "his name is iris!" charity groaned, before picking up her book and going back to her reading. "seriously, what could have happened? we were perfectly fine!" marina asked, sitting down on the edge of her bed.

"you guys were literally kissing a couple of days ago. and now he says he doesn't fancy you anymore?" hayden questioned. "call us the scooby-doo gang because we will figure out what is going on with him!" amelia exclaimed.

"okay, for now, just pack. just think, for the next week we'll be at my house together! and then we'll come back for the delphinus ball! everything will be perfect!" amelia said, trying to cheer up the mood in the dormitory.

as everyone was saying goodbye to their friends who were staying behind for the winter break, marina went on a hunt to find remus.

"remus!" she yelled when she saw him. he wheeled around and when they made eye contact he rolled them. "remus! can we just talk!" she asked as she approached him. "fine, but i'm looking for someone, okay? so hurry up." he snapped. it was marina's turn to roll her eyes.

"why are you acting like this?" she asked. "acting like what?" he asked, acting oblivious. "you know! last week you were talking about how much you liked me, and now you've been treating me like dirt! it's so dumb!" she ranted.

"i lied. you believed me. who's the dumb one?"

marina felt her jaw drop. "what do you mean by lying?" she asked. "it's obvious, phoenix. i never liked you." he hissed. "let me guess. you were using me to get closer to charity?" marina asked. this had been pulled on her one too many times.

"what? no, i'm way over her." remus muttered. "i was just doing it for fun," he explained. "wait...you really thought i would like someone like you?"

"what do you mean someone like me?" marina asked, stepping closer towards him. "i think you know exactly what i mean." he spat. marina grabbed him by the neck of his jumper and pulled him down to meet eye level with her.

"you want to tell me what you mean?" she asked in a dangerously low voice. "you just are way too forgiving, huh? to many second and third chances." he teased. "i gave you your chance, and you used it to stab me in the back." marina hissed.

she pushed him away and stormed back to her friends, trying to ignore the tears that seemed to want to come out of her eyes.

tehe...i guess you can say it's always one step foward and three steps back...
