remus did not want to say no to marina.
in fact, he wanted to do the exact opposite. when she asked him to the ball, he almost jumped for joy.
but, he can't take marina to the dance.
when remus lupin looked back at his friends, he saw the great hall right behind them. in that hall, there were boys, remus thought, that would be a way better fit for marina.
remus thought he wasn't good enough.
so, he spat out the word no, and walked into the great hall quickly. he heard laura go "what the fuck, lupin?" but, he ignored it.
he sat down quickly at the gryffindor table and stared down at his lap. that's when peter sat next to him.
"mate, i love you, but what the hell?" he asked. remus felt sirius sit down on the other side of him. "moony! you just rejected marina fucking phoenix!" sirius pointed out.
"sirius, i think i know what i did!" remus groaned, putting his head in his hands. "why did you do it?" james, who was standing behind remus, asked.
"look around, james!" remus sighed, standing up. the three boys looked around cluelessly, not understanding what remus was getting on about.
"i'm not good enough for her!" he explained. "moony, don't say-" james started, but remus stopped him.
"don't tell me that it's wrong! i'm the gryffindor who was a prat to her for the past four years! i don't deserve to go to the ball with her! i don't deserve her feelings!" remus said, trying to stay quiet.
"you are! why else would she have asked if she didn't think you were good enough?" sirius asked. "besides, after you stormed off, she explained she wanted to go as friends."
remus' throat went dry. "so...so you're telling me i rejected going with her as friends?" he asked. the three nodded. "fuck!" remus groaned.
"just go over there and apologize!" peter said reasonably, standing up with remus and james. "and say what?" remus asked helplessly, tossing his head up to the sky.
"exactly what you said to us!" sirius said, also standing up. "she'll melt right there on the spot!"
"i'm not saying that! she'll think i'm insane!" he snapped. "come on, you're going to this dance with her." james sighed, grabbing his arm and pulling remus towards the hufflepuff table.
"woah! woah! no!" remus opposed, but sirius and peter stood behind him, holding onto his shoulders, so there was really no getting out of this.
"i swear to godric, i will turn into a werewolf right now." remus threatened, only to be laughed at as they approached the hufflepuffs.
remus saw marina talking aggressively to laura, her face scrunched up and her hands flailing around. oh, shit.
"hello, ladies." sirius sang as they approached. they all stopped talking and stared at the four boys in front of them.
"my dear friend remus would like to talk to marina!" james said loudly. laura was about to stand up and protest, but marina stood up first, grabbed remus and they walked to the entrance of the great hall.
"so..." remus said awkwardly, shoving his hands in his pockets. "i'm not mad, you just could have been less of a bitch about it." marina snapped.
"okay, hear me out." remus said. "i want to go to the ball with you."
"oh? you do? i'm sorry, i figured no, meant you didn't want to go! i'm sorry for the confusion!" marina said sarcastically, glaring daggers at him. "listen!" he said again, and marina shut her mouth.
"i just, i feel like you should go with someone who wasn't a prat to you for four years?" remus said awkwardly, scratching the back of his neck.
"so...what i'm hearing is...you don't think you're good enough for me?" marina guessed. remus looked at his shoes, but nodded.
"well, i'm pretty amazing." marina sighed. "but, that doesn't mean i'm too good for you. and i want to go as friends!"
remus smiled awkwardly. "so, remus, will you go to the ball with me as friends? or would you want me to tell charity that you're free?" marina asked. remus laughed.
"i'll go with you, i'll go with you." he said. marina winked at him and walked away, leaving remus with a wide smile on his face.
