the night did not go as marina planned it. she still can't tell is that is a good thing or a bad thing.
it started off great. lily and marina were playing chess, with alice watching, dorcas and laura were stacking cards, hayden and mary were playing exploding snap, and marlene and amelia were watching hayden and mary. the marauders were they too, but they were in the far corner of the room, so marina didn't care.
"i'm so going to win this." lily said cheekily, moving a chess piece. "oh, is that so?" marina asked, raising her eyebrows. they played for twenty more minutes, before marina won. "checkmate." she said happily as lily face planted into the shag carpet below them.
"should have told you, marina is the best chess player at hogwarts." laura said. "i just watched and i have to agree with that." alice said, standing up.
"sorry to interrupt, but remus is obviously the best chess player." sirius said, walking over to them, closely followed by his friends. "not better than me." marina snapped. "want to bet?" remus asked.
"let's do it." marina said. remus and marina both sat down, moved the pieces where they were supposed to be, and started. "ladies first." remus said as everyone crowded around them. "this will be the game of the century!" peter said excitedly.

marina won the chess game.
it was very close though, she had to admit. remus was much better than she thought he was going to be. they both stood up, and to her surprise, remus put out his hand.
"good game." he said. she heard the tiniest bit of sarcasm in his voice, but shook his hand anyway. "good game." she said. once he turned around, she wiped her hand on her pants.
"that's what i'm talking about!" lily said, giving a high five to marina. "finally, someone beat him!" alice said. "people have been challenging him to chess games for years, pretty sure you are the first to win."
"can i go punch potter now?" laura asked as everyone went back to their original seats, the marauders in the corner once more. "why?" marina asked. "amelia said i could punch him later at the ball, and now is later!" laura said. everyone turned to amelia.
"firstly, i said maybe, and secondly, i was just saying that to get you to calm down." amelia said, shrugging. "unfair!" laura whined, falling to the floor dramatically. "she's going to act like a toddler now, just ignore it." hayden said, and everyone nodded and continued their conversations, while laura rolled around on the floor.
"can we play truth or dare?" mary asked. everyone seemed to be pretty excited about this proposal, but marina was just confused. "what's that?" she asked. everyone turned to her like she was crazy.
"do you actually not know what it is?" marlene asked. marina shook her head. "charity doesn't allow us to play it, so i don't blame her." hayden said, shrugging. "why doesn't she let you play it?" alice asked. "she says it 'promotes bad habits' or some bullshit like that." laura said, rolling her eyes.
after everyone explained what truth or dare was to marina, they began playing. the marauders had seen what they were doing, gathered up their stuff, and walked out of the common room, which marina found odd, but told herself she should be happy, for they were not going to bother her or her friends anymore.
"okay, i'll go first." mary said, sitting up straight on the couch. "laura, truth or dare." she said. "dare. i'm no coward." laura responded. "go run up the boys dormitory steps, knock on the first door, then run back down here as fast as you can!" mary said. laura shrugged, before getting up.
they all heard her footsteps going up the stairs, it was quiet for a couple of seconds, then laura came running down the steps quickly, and hopped over the couch, landing next to amelia, who jumped and almost toppled over the couch.
"good job!" mary said, and everyone clapped. "my turn!" laura said, happily. she looked around the room at the girls, and her eyes fell on marina, who shook her head. "marina, truth or dare?" she asked. marina groaned.
"truth." marina said after some consideration. she wasn't a fast runner.
"do you fancy anyone?" she asked. marina shook her head. "i do not and i have never fancied anyone." she said. "yes you did! remember in first year-" hayden started, but marina interrupted her. "nope, i have never fancied anyone." she said.
"oh, no, now you have to tell us!" laura said. marina shot a dirty look at hayden, who shrugged. "it was bad. but trust me, there are no feelings anymore." she said. "who was it?" dorcas asked, getting impatient.
marina hid her face in her hands. "remus lupin."
everyone burst out laughing, even hayden, who already knew this. "you had a crush on lupin?" laura asked loudly, clutching her gut. "yes, now be quiet!" marina hissed, looking at the boys dormitory entrance way, as though expecting to see remus come waltzing in.
"i'm sorry, that's really funny!" alice said. "good thing you'll never like him again." laura said with a shudder. "never say never!" marlene sang.
marina threw the pillow from the couch at her.
