"i'm not going." marina said stubbornly as she stared at the mask she was supposed to wear. it was pink, to match her dress. her dress was a very nice material with a sparkly patter on the chest and floral, off the shoulder sleeves. she and stella had boughten very similar ones, only hers was blue.

"you have a date, you have to go." hayden sighed. hayden's dress was green with colorful hearts spread out and bows on her shoulders. she had a white mask to match. "technically, i can just ask felix to not go." marina said. hayden rolled her eyes.

"you look fine, tonight will be fine!" laura said. laura's dress was a long, black dress, with a sheer skirt and tiny sparkles leading down it. she had a black mask with feathers, and she was very happy with it, considering she made the mask herself.

"what if i fall while dancing? what if lupin just appears?" marina asked as she tied her hair up in a low ponytail. "personally, i don't think that will happen." amelia sighed. amelia was wearing a light purple dress with a ruffled bottom. she had a white and purple mask to match.

"well, hayden and laura are both going with one of the marauders, so they'll be around!" marina pointed out. "marina! you will not die if you see lupin! you have hated each other for five years, what is different?" laura snapped, tossing her mask onto her bed. marina stayed quiet.

"it just is different, okay? i don't know why." marina said quietly, gently lifting up her dress. "probably because you're in love with remus?" amelia suggested. marina scoffed and went into the bathroom to put her dress on.

she was going to the masquerade ball.

half an hour later, the four girls met charity in the common room. she insisted on them walking to the great hall together, and marina didn't want her to ruin their night, so they agreed, though laura had complained about it while they were getting ready.

"will the masks make us look unrecognizable?" hayden asked as they headed out of the common room and into the corridor. "not at all, but lets just amuse the professors." laura sighed. marina and amelia laughed, while charity smiled.

the five hufflepuffs slipped their masks on and looked at one another. it would be slightly hard to tell who they were from afar, but all the girls knew each other apart. "woah, laura? marina? where did you guys go?" hayden asked sarcastically, looking around like she was clueless.

on the walk there, they encountered lily evans and her friends. "marina!" she called upon seeing the girl. "hello, lily." marina said happily. she stepped out of her group and everyone stopped to talk. this seemed to annoy charity, but she didn't say anything.

"do you all have dates?" marlene mckinnon asked the group. "I do, as well as hayden and laura." marina informed her. "what about you all?"

"potter asked me to the ball about ten times, i rejected them all, of course." lily sighed. "i do." alice fortescue said shyly. "oh! yes! guess who our young alice is going with!" lily said happily. the group shrugged.
