they were halfway through the game when remus noticed the bandaid on marina's elbow.

he could tell it was the bandaid he had given her. he didn't know why it made him so happy. maybe he didn't think she would put it on. maybe because he gave it to her. he didn't know. all he knew was it made him so happy.

but remus didn't know why.

marina phoenix was his enemy! sure, he got a little worried for her when she suddenly disappeared, but he gets worried about everything!

they continued playing, but remus was distracted the whole time, trying to figure out why he felt the way he did about a bandaid.

"checkmate."

remus, who had been staring at the wall, trying to figure it out, snapped his head back to marina. she had a smirk on her face and was staring at the chess board, which remus quickly looked down to.

she had beat him.

"wow, phoenix." remus breathed out, looking astounded. "i guess i'm just better." she said, standing up from the table. remus scoffed. "just because you beat me twice doesn't mean anything." he said, also standing.

"don't be a sore loser, lupin." marina said, rolling her eyes. remus smirked. "i see you put the bandaid on." he said, changing the subject. "well, you seemed pretty sure that i needed it." she said, lifting her hand up and touching the bandaid.

"i mean, your elbow could have been infected, that would have been a big problem." he said, shrugging. marina smiled slightly. "why would you care if i had an infection? does the remus lupin care for poor, hufflepuff me?" she asked, making her eyes huge and putting her hands together as if she was praying.

"no, of course not." remus said. marina put her hands down and glared at him. "i didnt mean it like that!" he said quickly. marina cracked a smile. "calm down, lupin, i wasn't going to be mad. i know you don't care about me." she said. remus opened his mouth then shut it. he wasnt going to argue. he didn't care about her.

at least, that's what he told himself.

the next day, remus woke up at exactly six for school, just like he does everyday. he hopped in the shower, quickly washing his hair, and walked out of the bathroom, a towel wrapped around his waist.

james and sirius were awake, having a pillow fight. peter, however, was still sleeping. "morning, moony!" sirius said as he dodged a hit from james. "good morning," remus said sleepily, walking over to his trunk and pulling out his uniform.

"how was your date with marina?" james asked as he hit sirius in the head. remus hadn't gone straight home last night, but instead sat in the astronomy tower until midnight, and by the time he got back, the three boys were already asleep.
