the whole dormitory had a lingering sadness on it.

hayden, who was normally the bright and joy of the room, shut down. she only spoke a few times during the day, and didn't bother being nice anymore.

laura was unhappy as well. she decided to not to talk to sirius, and that was obviously taking a toll on her. she got more snarky and bitter.

amelia was the same, but she did get quieter, which was never good, as she was always quiet. she also was ignoring the marauders.

even charity was giving the girls an easy time. she barely spoke to any of them, except some words of comfort to hayden every now and then.

marina pretended like everything was fine. she acted as though it didn't bother her and became hayden and laura's shoulders to cry on. but, of course, she was really upset.

things were finally going good with remus, and now they were right back at square one. the hufflepuff girls hating the marauders.

on the monday after everything had happened, hayden was refusing to get up, which all of the girls understood. she eventually did when amelia mentioned the test they would be having that day, but she just tossed her hair into a ponytail and quickly put on her uniform.

marina just kept her hair down and did everything she would have normally done. she was going to prove to the others and herself that she was not affected by remus.

they all decided to skip breakfast, except for amelia, who brought toast back up an informed the girls that peter seemed to be sulking, which made hayden smile a little bit.

"you're not going to break down crying when you see peter today, right?" laura asked as the girls finally began to walk to their first class, which, of course, was defense against the dark arts with the gryffindors.

"i hope not." hayden said, shrugging. "i must say, marina, you are handling this a lot better than i thought you would have." she added.

"yeah, i don't really care, this is no different to how we were last year." she said simply. "or the year before that...or the year before that one."

the four walked into class and the marauders immediately turned around. remus gave marina a smile, which she ignored. he had to have noticed her ignoring him after the date, right?

that's when it hit all of them. peter and remus sat behind hayden and marina. james and sirius sat behind amelia and laura. this class would not end well for them.

without a word being spoken, they glanced at one another, nodded, and switched seats. now, hayden and marina were sitting in front of james and sirius and laura and amelia were sitting in front of remus and peter. the boys didn't exactly take this well.

james didn't care, he just patted sirius' shoulder sympathetically. sirius just scoffed and rolled his eyes slightly, as though he didn't care. it was obvious to james that he did.

peter narrowed his eyes slightly and looked from hayden to amelia, who was sitting in hayden's old seat. remus just sunk down in his seat, staring at his lap.

"well, i haven't cried yet." hayden whispered to marina, causing her to laugh slightly. "yeah, but peter is staring you down." she whispered back. hayden narrowed her eyes and glanced up at peter, who quickly turned to remus.

once class was over, the girls left in a group, whispering about what had happened. sirius had asked marina and hayden about laura, which they ignored, and remus asked laura and amelia about marina, which they also ignored. peter apparently stayed silent and had his head down all of class.

marina was about to separate from her friends for her next class when they hear someone shout laura's name, and they all turn around to see sirius running up towards them, james not far behind. peter and remus were nowhere to be seen.

"laura, what's wrong? why have you been ignoring me? and why did you switch seats?" he asked out of breath once he reached the group. laura looked at him with disbelief and anger all across her face.

"you are defending peter! i get it, he's your best mate, but he's a cheater! it's like you don't even care!" laura spat, glaring hard. sirius was about to defend himself but james beat him to it.

"stop being stupid, laura. peter didn't cheat on hayden." james snapped. laura charged at james, before any of the girls could stop her. they weren't going to stop her anyways, james deserved it.

but, sirius grabbed her arm and pulled her towards him. laura elbowed him hard in the chest, spat on the floor, and walked ahead of the girls, muttering "let's go."

marina glanced back and saw remus and peter, watching the whole thing. her and remus made eye contact, before she gave a sad shrug and turned back around to catch up with her friends.

it's always one step forward and three steps back.
