A large ship slowly makes its way across the ocean as a small town begins to appear on the horizon. Meanwhile, a large crowd stands around a Pokémon battlefield on the ship whilst a young boy yells, " Raticate, use Double-Edge!" " Raaaaaaaatttt," it shouts as it runs towards its opponent, a Charizard, with its body glowing in a faint white light. A familiar face grins before shouting " Charizard, dodge it and then use Dragon Claw!" " Chaaaaar," the Charizard says as it flies into the air causing Raticate to miss its attack. " Zaaaaaaaard," Charizard cries as the claws on its right-hand glow with dark purple energy before it slashes Raticate across the face with them. " Caaaaaaaaaate," the Raticate shouts in pain as it lands in front of its trainer and struggles to get back on its feet. Once again, Mitch Harper grins as he commands Charizard to, " finish it with Flamethrower!" " Zaaaaaaard," it screeches whilst shooting a medium sized stream of fire out of its mouth. The flames slam into Raticate as it screams, " Caaaaaaaate," in pain before falling to the ground with spirals in its eyes.
Charizard lands back on the deck of the ship and lets out a victorious roar, " Chaaaaaariiiiiiizaaaard!" " Great job, Charizard," Mitch exclaims as the opposing trainer returns their unconscious Raticate to its Poke Ball. Before anybody has time to say anything else, a voice from the intercom begins to speak. " Attention all passengers, we are approaching New Bark Town, prepare to disembark!" Mitch and Charizard turn to each other and happily grin as Mitch says, " looks like we've made it to Johto! Let's go look for Professor Elm's lab when we dock!"
********************
Mitch and Charizard stand in front of a very large white building as Mitch looks at a map of the city. " Okay, the map says that this is Professor Elm's Research Lab," Mitch says as the two of them walk through the automatic doors. They make their way through a big room full of laboratory equipment before reaching a table with three Poke Balls sitting on it. As the two of them stare at the Poke Balls, a mechanical voice speaks up from behind them. " Charizard, the Flame Pokémon, a Fire and Flying type, the evolved form of Charmeleon and the final evolved form of Charmander, its wings can carry this Pokémon close to an altitude of 4,600 feet. It blows out fire at very high temperatures."
A man wearing a lab coat stands behind them and has a Pokedex pointing at Charizard. " Ah, I guess that means that you're Mitch Harper from Pallet Town in the Kanto Region?" " Yeah, that's me. Are you Professor Elm," Mitch asks as the man walks towards them. " Yes, Professor Oak called me and said that you would be here for a Johto Pokedex and even suggested that that I give you a Johto Starter Pokémon. Here's your Johto Pokedex," Elm says as he hands the tiny machine to Mitch. " Thank you! Now, if you'll give me a second, I'm going to look up information on the Pokémon that Chase Bolin used in our battle," he says as he begins searching through his new device.
" Typhlosion, the Volcano Pokémon, a Fire type, the evolved form of Quilava and the final evolved form of Cyndaquil, it can hide behind a shimmering head haze that it creates using its intense flames. Typhlosion creates blazing explosive blasts that burn everything to cinders. Yanma, the Clear Wing Pokémon, a Bug and Flying type, it can see 360 degrees without moving its eyes. It is a great flier capable of making sudden stops and turning midair to quickly chase down targeted prey. Espeon, the Sun Pokémon, a Psychic type, one of the evolved forms of Eevee, psychic power builds up in the orb on its forehead as it bathes in the sunshine. Espeon is not good at battling at night. Skarmory, the Armor Bird Pokémon, a Steel and Flying type, a Pokémon that has a body and wings of steel. People in the past used feathers fallen from Skarmory to make swords and knives. Bellossom, the Flower Pokémon, a Grass type, one of the final evolved forms of Gloom and one of the final evolved forms of Oddish, its flower petals deepen in color through exposure to sunlight. When cloudy weather persists, it does a dance that is thought to be a ritual for summoning the sun. Stantler, the Big Horn Pokémon, a Normal type, those who stare at its antlers will gradually lose control of their senses and be unable to stand."
" Speaking of Johto Pokémon, I think that it's time that I introduced you to those starters that I told you about," Elm says as he walks up to the table with the Poke Balls sitting on it and lets the Pokémon inside of them out. " Chik, Chik, Chikorita," " Quil, Quil, Cyndaquil," " Toto, Toto, Totodile," they shout as they appear at Mitch, Charizard, and Elm's feet whilst Mitch brings out his new Pokedex to use on them. " Chikorita, the Leaf Pokémon, a Grass type, a sweet aroma gently wafts from the leaf on its head. It is docile and loves to soak up the sun's rays. Cyndaquil, the Fire Mouse Pokémon, a Fire type, it has a timid nature. If it is startled, the flames on its back burn more vigorously. Totodile, the Big Jaw Pokémon, a Water type, its well-developed jaws are powerful and capable of crushing anything. Even its trainer must be careful."
" So, who will it be? Chikorita? Cyndaquil? Totodile?," Elm asks as Mitch contemplates the question. " I choose you," Mitch shouts as he points at Cyndaquil and it squeals, "Quil, Quil, Quil," in excitement while jumping up and down. " Excellent, I'm assuming that you chose it because you saw how powerful Chase's Typhlosion was?" " Well, there's that and the fact that I think Cyndaquil is the cutest and coolest of the three," Mitch laughs as Elm returns Chikorita and Totodile and hands Cyndaquil's Poke Ball to Mitch. Mitch puts Cyndaquil's Poke Ball on his belt (like with Charizard, Cyndaquil will be outside of its Poke Ball a majority of the time) before he once again goes into a deep thought.
After a few minutes, Mitch stops thinking and turns to face Charizard. " You know, Charizard, you and the others put in a whole lot of work during our Kanto journey, and you've all gotten insanely powerful in doing so. I think it would be very unfair to use Pokémon as strong as you guys are against Johto's gym leaders, so I think that you should stay at Professor Oak's lab, and I'll call some of you in when it's time for me to fight in the Johto League Tournament." Charizard takes a few seconds to think Mitch's proposal over before it nods and roars a " Zaard," in agreement. The two of them embrace for a little while before Mitch returns it to its Poke Ball. " Make sure this gets to Professor Oak's lab safely," he says as he hands Elm the Poke Ball (Charizard was the only Pokemon that he had on him). " Not to worry, I'll see to it personally. By the way, if you are planning to take on Johto's gym leaders, I would recommend going to the gym in Violet City first. It's not a very long journey there from here, but you will have to pass through Cherrygrove City before you get there." " Violet City, okay, that's where I'll go. Thank you for the information and thank you for giving me Cyndaquil" Mitch says before looking down at his new Pokémon. " You ready to hit the road, little guy," he asks as Cyndaquil excitedly shouts, " Quil, Quil, Cyndaquil, Quil!" " Alright, let's get out of here," he exclaims as the two of them turn around and head towards the exit, ready for a new journey in the Johto Region!
