" Now use Lava Plume," Mitch yells as " Quilaaaaavaaaaa," Quilava uses its newest attack on a large rock, destroying it.  " Great job, Quilava. We should be out of this forest by the end of the day and from then it's only a few miles to Goldenrod City and our next gym battle, so this last-minute training could really help us," he says while proudly patting Quilava on the head. " Yeah, a loser like you will need decades of practice if you want to beat Whitney," comes a familiar voice from up ahead of them: it's Joe! " What are you doing here," " I lost my gym battle with Whitney by the skin of my teeth, so I decided to backtrack and train a little more before taking her on again. Should have known I would run into you." " You lost a gym battle and you're still calling me the loser?" " I would have won if she didn't use a stupid healing move at the last second! I see that weak little Cyndaquil that you had somehow managed to evolve." " Weak? Our last battle ended in a draw!" " Yeah. How about a rematch using the same two Pokemon we used last time and this time, Croconaw and I will destroy you," Joe says as he throws a Poke Ball into the air.

" Croco, Croco, Croconaw, " Joe's Croconaw shouts as it appears in front of them and confidently smirks at Quilava, who angrily growls in response. " Croconaw, the Big Jaw Pokémon, a Water-type, the evolved form of Totodile, if it loses a fang, a new one grows back in its place. There are always 48 fangs lining its mouth." " You're on! Quilava, use Swift," Mitch yells as Quilava fires multiple yellow energy stars out of its mouth. " Counter that with Slash and then use Bite," Joe hollers as the claws on Croconaw's right arm glow white and extend a little before it slashes the Swift stars, destroying them.  " Crocooo," it shouts as it runs at Quilava with its mouth agape. " Use Lava Plume," Mitch orders as Quilava rears up on its back legs as its front legs glow crimson red. " Lavaaaaaaa," it cries as it slams its front legs on the ground, causing a geyser of fire to blow up from beneath Croconaw. " Naaaaaaaaaaaaw," it cries as it is sent flying through the air and lands at the base of a tree with a loud thud. " Now use Flame Wheel," Mitch shouts as Quilava rolls into a ball of fire and slams into a still recovering Croconaw. " Crocooooooo," it cries as it lands in front of Joe and tries to get back to its feet.

" Come on Croconaw, we can't let these losers have the upper hand. Use Water Pulse," Joe says as Croconaw, who is currently on one knee, forms a ball of water between its hands and throws it towards Quilava. Quilava tries to dodge but is too slow: the attack hits it in the side and knocks it back. " Laavaaa," it whimpers as it hits a tree, but manages to get up in time for Mitch to shout a command, " use Quick Attack!" " Quilll," it cries as it runs very fast towards Croconaw with a white energy streak trailing behind it. " Use Water Gun," Joe commands as Croconaw fires a medium sized stream of water from its mouth. " Laaaaaaaavaaaaaaaa," it screams as the Super Effective move slams into it and knocks it backwards. It lands in front of Mitch and weakly gets back to its feet. " Wrap this up with Ice Fang," Joe orders as Croconaw's fangs become coated in ice. " Use Ember and aim for its teeth," Mitch exclaims as Quilava shoots multiple fire balls out of its mouth. The fire balls hit the ice on Croconaw's fangs and melt it, causing Croconaw, who was rushing towards Quilava with its mouth open, to stop and say " Crocc," in a confused tone. " Use Quick Attack and Swift at the same time," Mitch commands as Quilava runs at Croconaw with the white energy trailing behind it and fires multiple yellow stars out of its mouth.

" Crocoooooooo," Croconaw shouts as the Swift stars hit it in the chest and explode. " Lavaaaaaaaa," Quilava cries as it slams into Croconaw at high speed, sending it flying. " Quick, use Lava Plume," Mitch hastily shouts as Quilava rears up and slams its crimson red front legs on the ground. " Naaaaaaaaaaw," it shouts as the lava geyser hits in on the back and causes it to be flung up even higher than before. " Seriously!? Croconaw, they're making us look like the weak ones! Fight through the pain and use Water Gun," an agitated Joe shouts. To the surprise of both Mitch and Quilava, Croconaw manages to twist around in mid-air and shoot the medium sized stream of water out of its mouth. Quilava manages to avoid the full attack, but some of it skims it on the back, briefly knocking it to the ground. It manages to get back to its feet as Croconaw lands feet first on the ground with a loud thud. " Crocccc," it whimpers as it falls to one knee: the rough landing damaged it a little! " Use Quick Attack while it's down," Mitch exclaims as Quilava begins to run towards Croconaw.  " Get up and use Slash," Joe angrily hollers as Croconaw tries to get back up and fails, Quilava slams into it and sends it rolling across the forest floor. It lands a few feet in front of Joe and to everyone's surprise, manages to fight through all the pain it's in, jump to its feet, and hit Quilava across the face with Slash.

Quilava stumbles backwards and shakes off the pain from the attack as Croconaw struggles to stay on its feet. " Looks like Croconaw doesn't have much left in it. Finish it off with one last Lava Plume," Mitch commands as Quilava begins to rear up. However, Joe appears to have other plans, " Oh, no you don't! We're not losing this! Use Water Gun!" Croconaw fires the Water Gun from its mouth just as Quilava's front legs hit the ground: the medium sized water stream slams into Quilava and knocks it backwards as the fire geyser shoots up from underneath Croconaw and sends it soaring. Both Pokémon end up landing at the bases of trees with spirals in their eyes. Mitch rushes over to check on Quilava as Joe angrily stares in disbelief and returns Croconaw to its Poke Ball. There are a few seconds of silence before Joe disturbs it with a loud scream, " ARE YOU KIDDING ME! ANOTHER DRAW WITH THIS LOSER! I SHOULD ME MOPPING THE FLOOR WIH HIM, BUT INSTEAD WE'RE EVENLY MATCHED! FORGET THIS STUPID FOREST, I'LL TRAIN SOMEWHERE ELSE! Joe stomps off, leaving Mitch and Quilava, who Mitch healed with a Revive while Joe was screaming to himself, alone in the forest.
