"What are we supposed to tell the girls? And Caleb?"
"We don't tell them."
"What? We have to Jay."
"Why? They don't need to know, and honestly I don't think it's safe telling Kaila this kind of stuff anyway."
"What are you talking about? You know you've been very strange about Kaila, ever since she got back,"
"Because it doesn't make sense! Does it? She's the one who survived two years underground, no sunlight, no food, no water, trapped in a cage? Come on Patrick, Sasha died after being stuck by a thorn there is no way that Kaila could survive without something happening to her too."
"You mean...you mean the way something happened to Lennox."
"Yes."
Jay paced back and forth as Patrick narrowed an eye, suspicious of his friend's behaviour. "What aren't you telling me Jay? Because I know you, she told you something didn't she? You know what happened to my daughter."
At that Jay stopped pacing. He reluctantly looked at Patrick, who gave up on his patience and dragged Jay into his office.
"What do you know?"
"I can't tell you-"
"The hell you can't, Jay if you know the truth-"
"It's not safe for you to know the truth, I don't think I'm even supposed to know. All I know is that when she told me we had to drive across town before she would even think of talking to me, because she was worried that Kaila would overhear. I won't tell you all of it, but yeah, she told me what happened to her feelings, when she didn't have them anymore. It happened three months after they disappeared, she said she kept getting headaches and everytime she got a headache the veins would spread. Then one night she has something worse, like an embolism or something, the pain was worse than anything she'd ever felt, the next morning she couldn't feel anything, it's been that way ever since."
Jay watched Patrick sigh and turn on the spot, shaking his head as he did so.
"I didn't understand any of this back then, I don't understand it now. And I don't understand why she would be worried about telling you because of Kaila."
"Because I don't think she trusts Kaila. I sure as hell don't."
"What have you got against that girl? She has been through...more than any of us could possibly imagine,"
"Has she?"
"Oh, Jay,"
"No, just hear me out."
