Evelyn, through Kaila's eyes, could see just how beautiful her daughter had become. Despite spending everyday with her for most of the year, this was the first opportunity she'd had to talk to Lennox honestly, and explain herself. Lennox remained still enough for her to untie the rope around her wrist, staring at her mother as she did so.
"How is this happening?"
"I know, you must be confused, and have so many questions, I promise you I will answer them all."
She put the rope aside, finally taking the chance to get a good look at Lennox's face. This was also the first opportunity she'd had to study the veins cascading through her daughter's skin. She looked disappointed as she gently touched them.
"I'm sorry. I wanted there to be another way, I'm so sorry I couldn't stop it. I can't imagine how painful it must've been."
All of a sudden Lennox managed a coherent thought, reminiscing on the memory of that night, when Kaila stood beside her watching her writhe in pain.
"You were there. You saw it." She had a look of scorn on her face, and Evelyn withdraw her hand.
"I wanted to stop it. But it wasn't my place, it needed to be done."
"What did? What even happened to me mom? What did you let them do to me?" Lennox stood up as Evelyn sighed and slowly arose from the ground.
"All in good time Lennox, you'll know the truth soon."
"Why are you talking like that?" Lennox said frustratedly, pacing on the stop for a few seconds across the room before staring at her. "You could've stopped it. You could've helped me, protected me, and you let me suffer like that? We've been together almost a year now, you let me believe that Kaila could've actually survived, Jay was right, you're not her. Is she dead? Has she been dead this whole time?"
"Yes." Evelyn nodded bluntly.
Lennox stood still, looking Kaila's body up and down in disgust as her mother spoke.
"She died 5 days after being locked in the cage, we kept her body as a vessel."
"You did what? A-and who's we? Who else,"
"The spirits, residing in this manor. We were unfortunate to lose Sasha's body too. Had you managed to convince Caleb to leave her be, her body would've been used as a second vessel,"
"Stop, just stop! Please, I don't-"
